Does asparagus help with cancer prevention?

(NaturalNews) Contrary to popular internet rumor, asparagus is not a miracle cancer cure. Like most fruits and vegetables, asparagus does offer a plethora of health benefits, including delivering some vitamins and minerals effective in cancer prevention. Ingesting massive doses of asparagus to fight cancer will most likely give you foul smelling urine and it also has some potential for feeding certain cancers.A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association in 2010 found that vitamin B6 when combined with folate and methionine can reduce the chances of lung cancer by as much as two-thirds. Asparagus contains both vitamin B and folate. (Methionine, an amino acid, can be obtained from meat, poultry, fish, cottage cheese, peanuts beans, eggs, garlic, lentils, onions, yogurt and sesame seeds).

In 2009, researchers in Nanjing, China identified a compound called Asparanin A in asparagus. The researchers found that Asparanin A arrests the growth liver cancer cells and can even cause death in those cells.
Asparagus is the best food source of the anti-oxidant glutathione, a substance researchers at the Institute for Cancer Prevention have identified as effective in warding off cancer. Glutathione is also believed to have anti-viral properties.

Research has shown that chronic, excessive inflammation and chronic oxidative stress heighten the risk for many types of cancers. Since asparagus contains many nutrients, including saponins, which have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory property, it deserves a place in a healthy diet, along with other vegetables and fruits. The anti-inflammatory nutrients in asparagus make it an excellent dietary choice for people trying to combat diseases such as arthritis and rheumatism. It can also help prevent varicose veins.

Asparagus benefits the body in many other ways. Ayurvedic healing refers to asparagus as "shatavari" which means "women with a thousand husbands." Ayurvedic experts have used shatavari for centuries to treat the symptoms of menopause as well as infertility and loss of libido.

Asparagus contains an amino acid called asparagine. Normal cells generally manufacture this substance, but leukemia cells often cannot and must obtain their supply from adjacent normal cells. If starved of asparagine, leukemia cells die. Elgar, a pharmaceutical prescribed for patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), contains an enzyme, L-asparaginase, which destroys circulating asparagine in order to starve leukemia cells. The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians states "Eating asparagus would seem ill advised for people who have cancers that respond to l-asparaginase."The popular health myth of asparagus as a magical remedy for cancer is unfounded; the prescriptions which accompany that myth for ingesting massive quantities of this vegetable will likely not have the desired effect. Recommendations which rely solely on one food as a supposed miracle cure are based on a mistaken allopathic "magic bullet" concept to the alternative health model.

Alternative health is about balance, not about one single herb, vegetable or fruit with extraordinary properties. Take with a grain of full spectrum salt any health advice which sounds suspiciously like it came from the Lord of the Rings.

Nature offers an abundance of healthy choices for creating health and these foods work in combination with each other, and with a healthy lifestyle. Eating reasonable amounts of asparagus, as part a diet which includes many different fruits and vegetables, will help protect you against cancer, as well as help strengthen the body in other ways.

Certain foods are not advisable for some people, who have allergies and food sensitivities. In the case of those few cancers, such as ALL, which respond to l-asparaginase, asparagus may be a food to limit in your diet.

Armenian, Greek clergy clash in Bethlehems Church of the Nativity

December 29, 2011 - 10:47 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - Dozens of priests and monks went at it with fists and broomsticks Wednesday, Dec 28, in Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity in the West Bank, police said.

The brief brouhaha broke out while about 100 Greek Orthodox and Armenian clergy were taking part in the annual Christmas cleanup at the 6th century holy site. Palestinian police were called in to restore order.

"No one was arrested because all those involved were men of God," Bethlehem police Lt. Col. Khaled al-Tamimi said, UPI reported.

The church, which is jointly administered by the Latin, Orthodox and Armenian churches, is spruced up every year between the Latin Christmas and early January, when the Orthodox sects celebrate Christmas.

GOGII Adds Free Calls To textPlus, Celebrates 20 Billion Messages Sent

1_RegistrationFor all the work that GOGII has put into their free textPlus messaging app, they have spent much of the last two or so years letting users do essentially one thing: communicate via text. As of today, that's no longer the case: with the launch of their Free Calls app, GOGII's trying to stake their claim in the voice space too. Sure, GOGII tested the waters with the textPlus's Voice Note functionality, but the Free Calls app takes that concept and runs with it. Current users will find no reason to fret: they can stick with their existing textPlus phone numbers while new users will get a U.S. phone number of their very own.

Planet found orbiting habitable zone of sun-like star (Reuters)

MOFFET FIELD, California (Reuters) ? The most Earth-like planet ever discovered is circling a star 600 light years away, a key finding in an ongoing quest to learn if life exists beyond Earth, scientists said on Monday.

The planet, called Kepler-22b, joins a list of more than 500 planets found to orbit stars beyond our solar system. It is the smallest and the best positioned to have liquid water on its surface -- among the ingredients necessary for life on Earth.

"We are homing in on the true Earth-sized, habitable planets," said San Jose State University astronomer Natalie Batalha, deputy science team lead for NASA's Kepler Space Telescope that discovered the star.

The telescope, which was launched three years ago, is staring at about 150,000 stars in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra, looking for faint and periodic dimming as any circling planets pass by, relative to Kepler's line of sight.

Results will be extrapolated to determine the percentage of stars in the Milky Way galaxy that harbor potentially habitable, Earth-size planets.

This is the first detection of a potentially habitable world orbiting a Sun-like star, scientists reported in findings to be published in The Astrophysical Journal.

Kepler-22b is 600 light years away. A light year is the distance light travels in a year, about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion km).

GROUND TELESCOPES

Planets about the same distance from their parent stars as Earth take roughly a year to complete an orbit. Scientists want to see at least three transits to be able to rule out other explanations for fluctuations in a star's light, such as small companion stars. Results also are verified by ground and other space telescopes.

Kepler-22b, which is about 2.4 times the radius of Earth, sits squarely in its star's so-called "habitable zone," the region where liquid water could exist on the surface. Follow-up studies are under way to determine if the planet is solid, like Earth, or more gaseous like Neptune.

"We don't know anything about the planets between Earth-size and Neptune-size because in our solar system we have no examples of such planets. We don't know what fraction are going to be rocky, what fraction are going to be water worlds, what fraction are ice worlds. We have no idea until we measure one and see," Batalha said at a news conference at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffet Field, California.

If Kepler-22b has a surface and a cushion of atmosphere similar to Earth's, it would be about 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 C), about the same as a spring day in Earth's temperate zone.

Among the 2,326 candidate planets found by the Kepler team, 10 are roughly Earth-size and reside in their host stars' habitable zones.

Another team of privately funded astronomers is scanning the target stars for non-naturally occurring radio signals, part of a project known as SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

"As soon as we find a different, a separate, an independent example of life somewhere else, we're going to know that it's ubiquitous throughout the universe," said astronomer Jill Tarter, director of the SETI Institute in Mountain View.

The Kepler team is meeting for its first science conference this week.

Samsung can sell disputed devices in US, for now (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? A federal judge has blocked Apple Inc.'s attempt to prevent Samsung Electronics Co. from selling certain smartphones and tablets in the U.S. because they allegedly infringe iPhone and iPad patents.

Judge Lucy Koh of the U.S. District Court in San Jose on Friday denied Apple's request for a preliminary injunction against Samsung. The ruling means that Samsung will be able to sell its Infuse 4G, Galaxy S 4G, Tab 10.1 and Droid Charge in the U.S. while it fights Apple's patent lawsuit.

Apple claims that Samsung's devices illegally borrow from the iPhone's and iPad's design.

Apple has had mixed results so far in its campaign against Samsung. Apple won a victory in Australia, where the country's highest court on Friday extended a temporary ban on sales of the Galaxy tablet until at least Dec. 9 as the court considers Apple's arguments.

The companies have filed lawsuits in 10 countries. Courts in several nations, including Germany and the Netherlands, have issued rulings that favor Apple.

"It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging," Apple said in a statement. "This kind of blatant copying is wrong and, as we've said many times before, we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas."

Samsung representatives did not immediately return an email message on Saturday. The company maintains that its products are distinctive from Apple's.

Groom admits to setting hotel blaze during wedding party

An angry hotel guest last week pleaded guilty to starting a fire at the hotel where he was celebrating his own wedding, the UK's Telegraph reports.

The fire - started at about 5 a.m. on Sunday, June 19 - caused about $9 million of damage to the Peckforton Castle Hotel in Cheshire, U.K., the story says. The hotel is "the only intact medieval style Castle in the country," its website says.

The blaze caused nearly 200 people including 11 children to be evacuated. Nearly 100 firefighters were required to extinguish it.

The night before the fire, Max Kay, 36, and his new wife had been heard arguing with the hotel's owners about a late payment for the wedding, the Telegraph says. Later that same night, they again argued with the owner about a bar bill.

No one was hurt in the fire, but prosecutor Duncan Bould said that luck played a role in the outcome, the Telegraph reports.

"Fortunately, and it is good fortune, the premises was equipped with a very efficient fire alarm and the combination of that and the staff meant that all the guests were able to be evacuated," he told the court.

Kay's lawyer Patrick Thompson said that his client committed the crime when he was "near bankrupt" and under significant stress.

The court heard that Kay was said to have consumed large amounts of vodka that day. Also, the hotel's closed-circuit TV system caught Kay on tape going in and out of the drawing room where the blaze started. He'll be sentenced on Jan. 3.
