Circumnavigating Life's Detours | World of Psychology

Circumnavigating Life's Detours?A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.?
~ Anonymous

The one thing about life that is certain is its unpredictability. Nothing stays the same forever. Every day we are bombarded with new stimuli, new challenges and new events.

For some of us, unpredictability creates a state of panic; it keeps us up at night and distracts us from enjoying the world around us. People like being in control of their social world and vulnerability is seen as a sign of weakness.

Uncertainty is so abhorred that Berger and Calabrese (1975) proposed the uncertainty reduction theory. The theory asserts that the anxiety created by uncertainty of the social world motivates people to reduce and avoid uncertainty.

So how can we better navigate around life?s inevitable detours?

Most of us are taught the importance of planning, being highly structured and organized. We have at our disposal copious technological devices designed to ensure that we stay on the right track within the right time frame. While spontaneity remains the spice of life, we relish existing within the confines of predictability (a safe and comfortable environment). Life, however, takes its own twists and turns, and for good reason. If it did not, we would quickly get bored.

I once encountered a woman suffering from severe depression. In her early 30s, she stated that her life is nothing like she imagined it would be. She revealed all her expected dreams and aspirations in a wonderfully detailed timeline. However, she despaired over all the obstacles, setbacks and wrong turns she had taken that have ?prevented? her from achieving her dreams.

I asked her ?if you were driving to town, and there was a roadblock, what would you do? Would you stay at the roadblock until the road was repaired, then proceed to drive to your destination?? With a confused expression she vehemently stated that she would have done the most sensible thing: ?Find another route.?

It is easy to become discouraged when things do not go according to plan. We all want things to turn out perfectly. But, just as we won?t sit by a roadblock waiting for the road to open, we should not sit at life?s roadblocks and despair about how difficult or unfair life is. There is always more than one way to get from point A to point B.

Erikson speaks about this in the last stage of his psychosocial theory of development. When we look back at our life, how are we going to see it? We have two options: We can anguish over all the obstacles and roadblocks that came our way, or we can enjoy the scenery of different routes, take pictures along the way, meet new people, develop new skills and practice acceptance.

How can we challenge ourselves to enjoy the scenery of a detour?

  1. Be flexible.Make plans but do not ever cast them in stone. Leave room for life?s curveballs. From an evolutionary perspective we are designed to be able to adapt. Use this to your full advantage.
  2. Increase coping skills.Consciously engage in activities that increase your ability to cope with uncertainty, e.g. finding humor in situations.
  3. Determine the controllable vs. uncontrollable events.Do not ruminate on events that are beyond your control. Focus instead on the events in your life that you can control and practice acceptance of those that you cannot.
  4. Meditate. The positive benefits of meditation cannot be overestimated. Meditation can create a state of calm and equanimity, decreasing your chances of experiencing panic in response to a detour.

"IT will continue to play an integral role in our organization ...

Viresh Oberoi

mjunction, a joint venture between SAIL and Tata Steel that promotes e-commerce activities in steel and diverse industries, always thrives on innovation. In an exclusive interaction, Viresh Oberoi, Founder CEO and MD of mjunction Services Limited shares with Sohini Bagchi of CXOtoday how the company has always moved beyond its original charter and diversified its business in an innovative manner by constantly leveraging the latest technologies.

As one of the largest e-commerce company in India, especially a leading e-marketplace for steel, what did you get right at mjunction? How did IT fit into your overall organizational strategy?
To begin with, what we got right was that we had a clear objective behind incorporating the company. At the time of the dot com boom, it was a common thing for many businesses to open up a dot com shop. However, as a joint venture of SAIL and Tata Steel, we believed that IT and web commerce has the potential to transform the entire business landscape and bring much value to enterprises. Before inception, the two companies researched on the e-commerce space to set up a venture together to bring about greater liquidity on the online platform and share the technological costs. It started growing rapidly as an innovative concept and customers across industry verticals as they witnessed greater process efficiencies at a fraction of the cost as against the traditional platform. We gradually diversified from steel and coal to venture into a range of e-commerce services in selling, procurement, finance and knowledge services across diverse industry verticals.
Being in the IT and internet-enabled commerce space, we have always focused on leveraging the latest available technology for growth, cost-efficiency and innovation. From that perspective, we have always had a strong technology backbone and we did this by developing internal competencies and get the best value out of our investments. IT is used at every level in the organization. It is viewed both as an enabler and a catalyst for business transformation. The internet will continue to enable companies like us to innovate in many ways in the future.

What distinguishes mjunction from its competitors?
Our flexible business development model distinguishes us from our competitors - who mostly focused on fulfilling very high targets. From the beginning, our company has been flexible in its approach. We carefully listen to our customers, identify their pain points and redesign the processes to solve their pain areas. We were able to deliver greater results in terms of transparency and efficiency, lower costs right from inception. As a result, our clients always enjoyed our services and entrusted us with larger volumes. The other advantage we have is that we operate on both the buying and selling side of the supply chain. As we always explored the latest technologies, we ensured that all our services are built on a common platform. This allowed us to take advantage of common technology infrastructure and in turn made us profitable.

In your long entrepreneurial journey, what are the key lessons you?ve learnt which you think other C-suites should know? What is your leadership style?
There are several things I?ve learnt both from my successes as well as my failures. First of all, I believe to be able to achieve something different, you need to move out of your comfort zone and explore endlessly. The story of the Spaniards burning their boats after landing in Mexico is a big lesson in business. If you are going to achieve something, have the heart, attitude and dedication to accomplish it. Also it is desirable to be a self starter and be able to solve problems yourself. I remember, when I started mjunction, we did not rope in consultants from outside and relied on inhouse expertise. The strategy worked out remarkably for us. There were times we failed as well, but it is important to learn from your mistakes, avoid those mistakes and move on with gusto.
As far as my leadership style is concerned, it keeps changing from time to time and from situation to situation. For example, when the company started, we were just a team of six striving to grow in a competitive marketplace. It was then that the style was more participative. Later, when we became a much bigger entity and started expanding our horizon, recruiting a lot more people, the style changed and became more delegative. What remains the same gaining the trust and confidence of your employees in whatever style you adopt.

What kind of CIO do you prefer ? a technology focused or a business savvy CIO? And do you think CIO and IT leaders should be part of boardroom discussions?
The CIO?s core activity revolves around technology. So I prefer my CIO to have a strong technology background, is focused on process efficiency and cost reduction. However, he should deliver IT initiatives to drive business value ? which is a critical component to stay competitive.
The CIO like other CXOs should be a part of the boardroom as he should discuss how the business can benefit from his technology expertise. In our company, the CIO is certainly part of the boardroom discussion like every other CXOs including the chief marketing officer and the chief financial officer. That?s because they are all part of the same management team and are expected to discuss strategies and make decisions being a part of the same organization.

Going forward, how do you plan to innovate with IT?
We have some aggressive expansion plans for the domestic market as well as we will expand our footprints in Europe. Currently, we garner 2-3 per cent revenue from the European market. We plan to reach a 50 per cent mark in the next 1-2 years. And for all these new initiatives, IT will continue to play an integral role. Until now we were using IT to bring about more transparency and efficiency in the organization and we were much successful in doing so. Now we feel the need to take it one step ahead. We plan to deploy analytics that can help us make better, faster decisions and automate processes. We have been using mobile and social media to strengthen our B2B operations. Now we are looking to consolidate our B2C business with the help of new and emerging technologies. Our team is working on a cloud computing project which will also become live in the coming months. As a company, we have always believed in leveraging the latest technologies, especially in the online space and we will continue to do so.

General Electric Sponsor of Inclusive Face of America Bicycle Ride with Disabled Veterans

Non-profit World T.E.A.M. Sports welcomes General Electric as a sponsor for the organization's April 26-28 Face of America ride from the Pentagon to Gettysburg with disabled veterans.

Holbrook, New York (PRWEB) February 27, 2013

World T.E.A.M. Sports CEO and President Paul Tyler announced today that General Electric (GE), a leader in energy, health and home, transportation and finance, has joined as a sponsor of the non-profit?s inclusive April 26-28 Face of America ride honoring disabled veterans.

GE is providing financial support for this year?s ride, which will travel 110 miles in two days from the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia to the historic battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. An expected 100 disabled veterans will ride hand cycles, recumbent bicycles and standard bicycles in the popular ride, which in 2012 included 500 participants from across the country. In addition to financial sponsorship, GE also is creating a participatory team that will allow employees to honor the veterans.

?We are delighted GE is once again joining our Face of America ride,? said Tyler. ?GE?s support both from a corporate and employee level means so much to the disabled veterans who are facing many challenges in their lives. Riding along with our able-bodied participants, their team will provide them with hope, as well as inspire others.?

"GE and its GE Veteran's Network of 10,000 employees are constantly looking for ways to help those that have served and given so much to our great country,? said Steven Canale, GE?s Manager of Global Recruiting and Staffing Services. ?The Face of America ride is all about what lies within us to overcome adversity, return to normalcy and to enjoy the outdoors. It's a moving experience that keeps GE coming back every year as a sponsor. The FOA is one of the most organized and well executed events we've ever supported. It reminds you of a military operation. Every contingency is covered to insure that the riders are well cared for and safe."

Participants of the Face of America ride will include veterans who live with disabilities ranging from loss of limb to blindness to Post Traumatic Stress. Participating veterans served America in wars from Afghanistan and Iraq to Vietnam. Active duty military and civilian riders will ride together with the adaptive veterans along Maryland?s scenic back roads and byways, ending at a celebration in Gettysburg April 28 that will include friends, family and area residents.

This year?s Face of America ride will be the 11th to be held by World T.E.A.M. Sports. Begun as a cross-country ride in 2000, the 2002 and 2003 rides served as the official 9/11 bicycle ride from Ground Zero in New York to the Pentagon. Since 2006, the Face of America has honored veterans of America?s military, including those with disabilities, on a Washington to Gettysburg route.

The 2013 Face of America ride is supported through generous sponsorships from Capital One Bank, Booz Allen Hamilton, American Portfolios, General Electric, Penske Truck Rental, Revolution Cycles and Subway of the Bethesda Naval Hospital.

Rambus Binary Pixel brings singleshot HDR photos to phone cameras

Most high dynamic range photography 'cheats' by merging multiple exposures into a composite image, which can lead to blurry shots. While HDR camera technology is catching up and will even let us record HDR video on our smartphones, Rambus believes its new Binary Pixel technology can achieve the effect with less waste. Its new imaging chip tries to replicate the human eye's range through setting light thresholds and oversampling the scene in both space and time. The results are more natural shadows and highlights down to the pixel level, with processing processing fast enough for video. The overall image reportedly suffers from less noise as well. Companies will have to talk to Rambus to implement Binary Pixel, although it's a considered a drop-in technology that should talk to existing processors and camera sensors, whether it's for smartphones or point-and-shoot cameras. Rambus may just want to hurry if it hopes to get noticed -- it's joining an increasingly crowded field.

Why Do So Many People Think They Need Gluten-Free Foods?

A baker stores breads after baking, on December 27, 2012 in a bakery of Ecole en Bauges, French Alps. Gluten allows dough to rise and gives bread its texture. People suffering from celiac disease or wheat allergy should not have gluten, but gluten intolerance is less understood.

Gluten is the spongy complex of proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye that allows dough to rise. As yeast ferments sugar and releases carbon dioxide, gluten inflates like a hot air balloon, giving breads and cakes their delectable texture.

According to USA Today, up to one-quarter of all consumers now want gluten-free food, even though only one person in 100 has celiac disease, the autoimmune disorder worsened by gluten ingestion. Going gluten-free seems somewhat faddish. The roster of celebrities who?ve gone temporarily or permanently off it includes Chelsea Clinton, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Drew Brees, and Oprah Winfrey, among many others.

If only a small fraction of people have celiac disease, why do so many think they need gluten-free foods? It?s tempting to dismiss the phenomenon as the latest hysteria around an over-diagnosed problem. But there is a more nuanced perspective that is more constructive and less judgmental.

To understand the proper role of gluten-free diets requires untangling three separate and unrelated medical problems blamed on gluten: celiac disease, wheat allergy, and gluten intolerance. Here?s the thing: The first problem is almost certainly underdiagnosed, but the latter two are likely to be overdiagnosed.

Celiac disease occurs in some people when fragments of gluten bond with intestinal proteins and provoke a powerful, misdirected immune overreaction from white blood cells. The friendly fire destroys the microscopic fingers called villi that line the small intestine and normally absorb nutrients. Once bombed out, the intestine can?t function correctly, causing symptoms such as belly pain, diarrhea, iron deficiency, and other severe problems. Celiac disease is properly diagnosed with a blood test followed by an endoscopic biopsy of the small intestine to confirm that villi are damaged.

For hundreds of years, doctors had known that some well-fed children still appeared malnourished, and in the first century the condition was named for the Greek word for abdomen, or ?koelia.? No one knew what caused it until World War II, when a Dutch pediatrician realized that a grain shortage dramatically lowered the death rate among children with the disorder from 35 percent to zero.

Today, we know that 1 percent of the world?s population has celiac disease?meaning almost 3 million Americans, of whom only a small fraction have been properly diagnosed. Often sufferers go for 10 years before diagnosis, and many physicians are unfamiliar with the signs. In fact, only one-third of primary-care doctors have correctly suspected or diagnosed it. Instead, some patients are incorrectly labeled as having irritable bowel syndrome, eating disorders, or dietary vitamin deficiency. (In one unusual case, a 5-year-old boy thought to have severe autism actually had celiac disease.) The lack of proper diagnosis is one reason advocacy groups think the condition is still underpublicized.

The second kind of problem that can be caused by gluten is wheat allergy. In this condition, a wheat-specific antibody, called an IgE, causes hives, sudden anaphylaxis, sneezing, and wheezing when someone eats gluten. In contrast to celiac disease, true wheat allergy, also called baker?s asthma, is believed to be pretty rare.

One problem with wheat allergy is that there is no good test for it. In fact, the blood tests for IgE (called RAST tests) are notoriously unreliable; for example, only one in eight children with a positive IgE test for peanuts is truly allergic. (In 2008, medical sociologist and physician Nicholas Christakis published a commentary in the British Medical Journal titled, ?This allergy hysteria is just nuts.?) Because RAST tests can screen for dozens of possible allergies at once, there is a danger of overdiagnosis, especially when interpreted by nonspecialists.

But the most confusing problems arise with the third problem blamed on gluten: so-called gluten intolerance. This condition is neither an autoimmune disorder, like celiac disease, nor an allergy, like true wheat allergy. There?s not even a mediocre blood test for gluten intolerance. The diagnosis simply relies on someone?s subjective feelings of bloating, bowel changes, or mental fogginess after eating gluten. This is a set-up for all manner of pseudo-scientific self-diagnoses, especially when you consider that 2 percent of people believe they have illnesses caused by magnetic fields.

And yet, a randomized, blinded trial in Italy just showed that one-third of patients with gluten intolerance clearly felt better with gluten-free diets, which confirmed ?a distinct clinical condition.? (Since most people can tell wheat-containing baked goods from their gluten-free substitutes, the investigators cleverly had all patients follow gluten-free diets and then take capsules containing either gluten or a placebo.) Another randomized trial published in a reputable journal also showed an improvement in symptoms in some subjects eating a gluten-free diet. Those researchers speculated that sufferers might have a problem not with gluten, but specific sugars called fructans in wheat products.

This is the most frustrating part of gluten intolerance. There are certainly people who have a problem with gluten that?s not autoimmune or allergic. And yet, the data suggest that almost two-thirds of people who think they are gluten-intolerant really aren?t. Part of the problem is that there is a lot of really bad science out there on gluten intolerance. As one scientific editorial notes drily, much of the literature ?suffers from significant methodological flaws,? such as very small numbers and no control groups. Some websites claim that one?s depression, arthritis, social phobias, or epilepsy, among other problems, might be caused by gluten intolerance.

Until the science gets sorted out, perhaps the best course for physicians is to suspect celiac disease and diagnose or exclude it correctly. They should also help patients sort through the conflicting data on wheat allergy and gluten intolerance. At the same time, patients convinced they have gluten intolerance might do well to also accept that their self-diagnosis may be wrong. In the end, it seems, medical uncertainly can best be approached by a little open-mindedness and humility from us all.

Symbolism weighs heavy at Iran nuclear talks venue

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) ? The venue for talks on Iran's nuclear program between world powers and Tehran carries a symbolism that Western negotiators will hope serves as a positive omen.

In the 1990s, Kazakhstan, a sprawling former Soviet republic, gave up a huge nuclear stockpile and now wants to capitalize on its nonproliferation track record by offering to host a bank of reactor fuel that would remove the need for countries, namely Iran, to enrich uranium for themselves.

That may be one proposal under consideration at this week's talks in Kazakhstan's commercial capital, Almaty, between Iran and six world powers ? five permanent U.N. Security council members and Germany ? on Tehran's controversial nuclear program.

Iran insists it is not working on a nuclear weapons program, but rather is enriching uranium only to make reactor fuel and for scientific and medical purposes, as allowed by international law.

But many nations are suspicious because Iran went underground after failing to get international help for its uranium enrichment program in the 1980s, working secretly until its activities were revealed a decade ago. More recent proposals for international shipments of reactor fuel in exchange for Iranian enrichment concessions have foundered, with each side blaming the other.

Kazakhstan will not be involved in the talks that start Tuesday, and are expected to last for two days.

Kazakhstan's willingness to dispense with its once formidable arsenal in large part was born out of its grim legacy as a nuclear weapon testing site in Soviet times. Some critics say, however, that Kazakhstan's vocal trumpeting of its nonproliferation record is designed to act as a smoke screen for its lack of democratic freedoms.

Amid the Soviet Union's collapse, the Central Asian nation unexpectedly found itself holding more than a thousand strategic nuclear warheads and 370 nuclear-tipped cruise missiles, becoming the world's first predominantly Muslim-populated nuclear power.

Within a day of Kazakhstan declaring independence in 1991, Palestinian Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat flew into Almaty in a visit that alarmed Western diplomats. Weeks later, Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev visited Pakistan, but officials ruled out cooperation on nuclear technology.

A former foreign minister of Kazakhstan last year claimed that Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi was yet another hopeful buyer snubbed by Kazakhstan.

Instead of responding to the overtures of Muslim partners in its neighborhood, including Iran, Kazakhstan sought help to divest itself of its powerful inheritance.

Its warheads were transferred to Russia by 1995, and the removal of highly enriched uranium stocks from a secret Soviet-built facility was done with U.S. assistance.

That process was inspired by Kazakhstan's recent history.

From 1949 to 1989, the bare flatlands of northern Kazakhstan were the site for 456 nuclear tests ? 116 of them above ground ? that affected an area the size of Arizona and populated by some 1.5 million people.

"The damage on our environment has been so serious that scientists believe it will take centuries to restore to normality," Nazarbayev said in a 2009 speech marking the 20th anniversary of the final test.

But even as Kazakhstan got rid of its nuclear arsenal, suspicions lingered.

U.S. officials investigated claims that Iran had secured components for nuclear weapons from Kazakhstan but turned up no evidence. Kazakhstan said only that it had been approached by Iran in the early 1990s for the purchase of low-enriched uranium, but not for weapons-grade material.

Since 2009, Kazakhstan has been putting itself forward as the potential host for a nuclear fuel bank to be operated under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Nazarbayev appealed to Tehran in a New York Times op-ed piece in March 2012 to eschew its pursuit for nuclear power status.

"Kazakhstan's experience shows that nations can reap huge benefits from turning their backs on nuclear weapons," Nazarbayev wrote.

Iranian diplomats are on record as supporting the fuel bank initiative, but little concrete progress has been made, prompting many observers to cast doubt on Tehran's insistence that it is not developing nuclear technology for military ends.

The fuel bank "should be a complete answer to Iran's concerns ? the fact that it is not indicates that the Iranian interest is not fuel supply but something else," said John Carlson, an adviser to the Washington D.C.-based Nuclear Threat Initiative.

The oil-rich nation's strategic geographical position abutting Russia and China, while fostering warm ties with Europe and the United States, have necessitated a nuanced diplomatic approach.

Kazakhstan and its neighboring former Soviet Central Asian nations are ambivalent toward the West's pressure on Iran, which make them useful intermediaries for Tehran. Speaking to Russian reporters in 2011, Nazarbayev insisted on pursuing diplomacy to solve questions surrounding Iran's nuclear program.

"If we talk about the Iranian nuclear program, then why don't we talk about the same program in Pakistan, and why not talk about Israel, which does in fact have nuclear weapons?" he said.

In neighboring Kyrgyzstan, the government has said it will not renew the lease on a U.S. air transit facility there used for military operations in Afghanistan when it expires in 2014 because, among other reasons, it fears that it could be subject to retaliation should Iran be attacked.

Countries in the region also have economic interests at stake. Turkmenistan, which shares a 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) land border with Iran, was delivering an average 1 billion cubic feet (30 million cubic meters) of natural gas daily to Iran between July 2011 and June 2012, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration figures.

Cultural ties and growing investment from Iran into Persian-speaking Tajikistan have also served well to secure Tehran another potential ally.

Central Asia expert Sebastien Peyrouse said in a paper published last year that countries in region feel in any event secure that they would not be target of Iranian nuclear attacks.

"They believe that if Iran got this capability, it would not use it against them. Iran as a state and a nation is highly respected in Central Asia, and there is no feeling of distrust towards a long-term partnership with it," Peyrouse wrote.

New York assemblyman apologizes for blackface party costume

(Reuters) - A state assemblyman apologized on Monday for donning blackface and wearing an Afro wig at a party celebrating the Jewish holiday of Purim, a costume that drew criticism from fellow lawmakers and the Anti-Defamation League bias monitoring group.

Democratic Assemblyman Dov Hikind of New York City, who had earlier defended the costume on his blog, said he did not mean to offend anyone with the outfit, which also included black sunglasses and an orange jersey.

"It was not meant to offend anybody, it was not meant to hurt anybody. I'm sorry that anyone was," Hikind said in an impromptu news conference, a video of which was posted on the New York Post website.

The costume, which he wore at a party at his home on Sunday, had drawn criticism from the Anti Defamation League, which said that he had "showed terrible judgment," according to the New York Times.

Assemblyman Karim Camara, the chairman of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, said he hoped Hikind could recognize the painful history behind blackface.

Blackface was often used in minstrel shows in the 19th and early 20th centuries featuring white performers portraying African Americans, often in a degrading manner.

"A lot of black leaders and clergy ? elected officials, everyday citizens ? were very upset or offended, and had a lot of questions as to, from their point of view, how could someone be so insensitive," Camara was quoted by the New York Times as saying.

Hikind had earlier defended the costume on his blog, saying the objections amounted to "political correctness to the absurd."

MYO senses your muscles, brings yet another way to control devices

With visions of Minority Report, many a user's hoped to control gadgets by wildly waving at a Kinect like a symphony conductor. Now there's another way to make your friends laugh at you thanks to the Thalmic Labs' MYO armband, which senses motion and electrical activity in your muscles to let you control your computer or other device via Bluetooth 4.0. The company says its proprietary sensor can detect signals right down to individual fingers before you even move them, which -- coupled with an extremely sensitive 6-axis motion detector -- makes for a highly responsive experience. Conservative candidate wins Cyprus election

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? Conservative candidate Nicos Anastasiades won Cyprus' presidential runoff election Sunday by one of the widest margins in 30 years, and will quickly have to face the formidable task of preventing the country from suffering a financial meltdown.

Anastasiades won with 57.48 percent, far ahead of left-wing rival Stavros Malas, who had 42.51 percent of the vote, according to final results.

Cypriots chose their leader at a critical time, and the new president will be under pressure to quickly finalize a financial rescue package with the eurozone's other 16 countries and the International Monetary Fund.

Sunday's vote was "a clear and strong mandate for change and reforms to lift our country out of the vicious circle of crisis,"?Anastasiades spokesman Tasos Mitsopoulos said after exit polls showed he would be a clear winner.

As results trickled in just after polls closed, Anastasiades' supporters celebrated outside his campaign headquarters in the capital Nicosia, honking horns and waving flags.

The new president will face a tough battle convincing reluctant countries, especially Europe's economic powerhouse Germany, that tiny Cyprus deserves help after its banks lost billions of euros on bad Greek debt.

Anastasiades will let the world know that "we're determined to assume our responsibilities, restore Cyprus' credibility, fight to implement change and reform while demanding form our (EU) partners to stand in solidarity with us," Mitsopoulos added.

His defeated rival said the new president could count on his support if his actions were deemed to be beneficial for Cyprus.

"I state that we will stand by the new president if we assess his actions and policies to be for the good of the country because the unity of our people is what's most important right now," Malas said as he conceded the election. "At the same time, we will be strong critics of whichever actions and decisions that we deem not to serve the country's best interests."

Anastasiades has capitalized on what many feel were five years of failed left-wing rule under outgoing President Dimitris Christofias and his communist-rooted AKEL party ? which backs Malas ? that caused Cyprus' sorry economic state.

The 66-year-old leader of the main opposition Democratic Rally party has boasted of his connections with Europe's center-right leaders and seeks to spend political capital he's built up over the years to convince Europe that Cyprus deserves help.

Last year, Cyprus sought financial assistance of up to ?17 billion ($22.7 billion), a sum roughly equivalent to its annual gross domestic product, which has raised concerns whether the country would be able to pay back any loan. The country has been unable to borrow from international markets since mid-2011, and turned to long-time ally Russia last year for a ?2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) loan to keep it afloat.

Cyprus, a divided island of around 1 million people in the far eastern end of the Mediterranean, is one of the smallest members of the 27-nation European Union and faces deep political and economic problems. The country has a presidential system of government, and the office carries a lot of power.

Cyprus has already enacted deep public sector wage cuts and tax hikes under a preliminary bailout agreement.

PFT: Two WRs nearly equal Combine 40 record

FlaccoGetty Images

If the Ravens want to make Joe Flacco the highest paid quarterback in the NFL, and if Flacco is satisfied to barely clear the bar set last year by Saints quarterback Drew Brees, there?s a quick and easy way to get this contract done.

Using Brees? 2012 contract as the starting point, Flacco would get a $40 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed base salary of $5 million in 2013, and base salaries of $10 million in 2014, $13 million in 2015, $15 million in 2016, and $18 million in 2017.

Under the rules of signing-bonus proration, $8 million would be applied to each year?s salary cap.? That would result in a cap number of $13 million in 2013, $18 million in 2014, $21 million in 2015, $23 million in 2016, and $26 million in 2017.

It equates to a five-year payout of $101 million ? $1 million better than Brees and, for now, making Flacco the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

The two sides would have to decide whether and to what extent the money due beyond 2013 would be guaranteed, for injury only or fully.? Last year, Brees received $40 million in the first year, with $20 million guaranteed for injury only in future years.? (The injury guarantees eventually convert to full guarantees.)

The cap number in the final year would be a potential problem for the Ravens, since Flacco presumably would have one more long-term contract left before retirement.? Specifically, the $26 million cap number in 2017 would translate to a franchise tag of $31.2 million in 2018.? Thus, it would make more sense for the Ravens to tack on a sixth year at a base salary of, say, $21 million.

This would keep the average north of $20 million per year and it would give the Ravens a more manageable franchise number of $25.2 million for 2019.

Is it really that simple?? Yes, it is.? Which means that it likely won?t happen this way.

Even though it could be worked out in a matter of hours.? Or, if both sides are truly motivated, a matter of minutes.

Olympus confirms that Sony is now its largest shareholder

Sony got a stake in Olympus' future when it made a $645 million investment into the troubled camera firm last September, getting a board representative and a controlling share of a medical imaging project. As of this weekend, however, the foot is that much further in the door: it's now Olympus' largest shareholder. A share transfer promised alongside the investment, and officially completed on the 22nd, has boosted Sony's stake from 4.7 percent to just under 11.5 percent. The share switch doesn't give Sony enough influence to dictate Olympus' day-to-day affairs, but Sony won't have to do as much to rally support if it wants action. Olympus isn't in the best position to kick such a large investor to the curb, either. We'd expect the company to at least listen more closely to what its major funding source has to say.

U.S. justices agree to weigh defendant's self-incrimination claim

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Monday to consider whether a criminal defendant's right against self-incrimination is violated when a psychiatrist who examined him testifies about his mental state.

Scott Cheever was sentenced to death for killing Greenwood County, Kansas, Sheriff Matthew Samuels while officers sought to enforce a warrant for his arrest in January 2005.

Cheever's defense was that he was intoxicated after using methamphetamine and therefore incapable of the premeditation necessary for him to be convicted of murder and attempted murder.

The legal question is whether Cheever's Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination was violated when the state called a psychiatrist who had examined Cheever to testify in order to rebut the claim that the defendant was incapable of rational thought.

The psychiatrist's testimony was based in part on what Cheever had said to him during the evaluation. The Kansas Supreme Court ruled in Cheever's favor.

Oral argument and a decision are expected in the U.S. Supreme Court's next term, which begins in October and runs until June 2014.

The case is Kansas v. Cheever, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 12-609.

Google.org Provides $4.4M In Grants To The Internet Society And NSRC To Improve Internet Access In Sub-Saharan Africa

GoogledotorgInternet access in many regions in Sub-Saharan Africa is still far from perfect, and a number of non-profits are working to improve this situation by providing technical assistance and working with local organizations to provide services to ISPs. Today, Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, announced that it is providing a total of $4.4 million to the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) and the Internet Society (ISOC) to help improve Internet access in this region. A majority of the $4.4 million?($3.1 million) will go to the Network Startup Resource Center, an organization based at the University of Oregon that trains network engineers and operators who “develop and maintain the Internet infrastructure in their respective countries and regions by providing technical information, engineering assistance, training, donations of networking books, equipment and other resources.” The grant is specifically meant to help the NSRC bring Internet access to students and staff at about 50 schools in Sub-Saharan Africa. The remaining $1.3 million will go to the Washington D.C.-based Internet Society, which will use it to improve and create Internet Exchange Points (IXP) in emerging markets. Internet service providers use IXPs to exchange traffic between their networks. Because the traffic is directly routed between ISPs, these providers then don’t have to pay a third-party provider to move the data between the two ISPs’ networks. This grant, the Internet Society writes today, will allow it to bring more of these IXPs to providers in emerging markets. This should help local ISPs to work more effectively, which in turn should also drive down end-user cost and increase Internet performance. “The Internet Society has proved to be one of the most effective institutions in the Internet community,? said Vint Cerf, vice president and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google in a statement today. ?I am confident that they will apply their grant wisely to extend their work to increase Internet access for everyone, including those in emerging markets.” Today’s grant marks Google.org’s second major grant so far this year. In January, Google also provided the Energy Foundation with a $2.56 million grant to support smart grid policy reform.

US Troops In Africa To Build A New Drone Base

The Drone War is expanding as al Qaeda surges across much of Africa. US troops have arrived in Niger in an expansion of the president's Drone War. The Drone War is the way the American left tries to fight conflicts overseas. Here's the story:

"President Obama announced Friday that about 100 U.S. troops have been deployed to the West African country of Niger, where defense officials said they are setting up a drone base to spy on al-Qaeda fighters in the Sahara.

It was the latest step by the Pentagon to increase its intelligence-gathering across Africa in response to what officials see as a rising threat from militant groups...

In response to the proliferation of extremist groups, the Pentagon has greatly expanded its base network for drones and other surveillance aircraft across Africa.

...In a letter to Congress, Obama said about 40 U.S. service members arrived in Niger on Wednesday, bringing the total number of troops based there to ?approximately? 100. He said the troops, which are armed for self-protection, would support a French-led military operation in neighboring Mali, where al-Qaeda fighters and other militants have carved out a refuge in a remote territory the size of Texas.

The base in Niger marks the opening of another far-flung U.S. military front against al-Qaeda and its affiliates, adding to drone combat missions in Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia. The CIA is also conducting drone airstrikes against al-Qaeda targets in Pakistan and Yemen..."

Renesas announces bigLITTLE mobile processor with nextgen PowerVR Series6 graphics

If Samsung likes an open playing field, it'll not be best pleased by this latest announcement from Japanese chip maker Renesas. Uncannily named the "APE6", it directly copies the same big.LITTLE design of ARM cores found in Sammy's Exynos Octa. The are four Cortex-A15s paired with the same number of Cortex-A7s, allowing a phone or tablet to switch between the two quad-core configurations depending on its workload. Interestingly, whereas the Exynos Octa's GPU has been rumored to contain a last-gen PowerVR Series5 GPU similar to that found in the iPad and PS Vita, the APE6 will come with a more future proof Series6 "Rogue" design. We've already spent some time with this GPU and it'll be a good day when we can finally try it out in a finished device and stack it up against a rival bearing Samsung internals.

Third straight weekend storm heads towards New England

BOSTON (Reuters) - New England faced it third straight weekend of storms that will dump a messy, extended mix of wet snow and freezing rain across the region, meteorologists said Saturday.

Meanwhile another storm in the West will roll out of the Rocky Mountains this weekend and could create blizzard conditions in Colorado, according to a National Weather Service advisory.

Snow blanketed much of the Midwest earlier this week, with more than a foot in Kansas on Thursday, forcing airports to cancel hundreds of flights and leaving motorists stranded on highways.

Starting on Saturday, New England's coast from northern Connecticut to southern Maine was expected to be pelted with a mix of snow and rain, according to a National Weather Service advisory, while inland areas could see significant snow accumulations.

Wet snow and freezing rain was expected Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening in southern New Hampshire, northern Rhode Island and much of Massachusetts, including the Boston metropolitan area.

Up to a foot of snow was possible in parts of central Massachusetts, National Weather Service meteorologist John Foley said. From 2 to 5 inches of snow may fall in Boston.

The heaviest snowfall was expected Saturday night through Sunday morning, with 1 to 2 inches per hour possible, the weather service said.

Steve Scardino, a software sales executive and lifelong New Englander from Hopkinton, Massachusetts said he wondered what all the fuss was about.

"Look, it's winter, it's New England, it snows. Happens every time!" he said, laughing.

The storm may bring sleet and freezing rain to the Appalachians and mid-Atlantic states, with thunderstorms expected in the Southeast, the weather service said. It likely will dump rain from New York City to Philadelphia, it said.

The storm barreled eastward for the weekend after pummeling the Midwest. In Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sly James said about 60 buses were stuck on snowbound streets on Friday, and even tow trucks were immobilized.

"It's still an ongoing process to get people off the roads," he told CNN.

SNOWY KANSAS

Kansas bore the brunt of the bad weather on Thursday, with up to 15 inches of snow in some parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

A closed 200-mile (323-km) stretch of Interstate 70 in central Kansas was strewn with cars stuck in snow.

National Guard troops riding in Humvees were dispatched to look for stranded motorists along the interstate and other highways, said Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for Kansas emergency management services.

The storm triggered severe thunderstorms from eastern Texas to Georgia.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and Kansas Governor Sam Brownback declared states of emergency because of hazardous travel and possible power outages..

In Nebraska, a 19-year-old woman was killed in a two-car accident on Wednesday on Interstate 80 near Giltner. The Nebraska State Patrol said weather was a factor.

An 18-year-old man died in Oklahoma when his vehicle slid into a tractor-trailer on a slushy state highway, the state's highway patrol said.

Drought-stricken farmers in the Great Plains, one of the world's largest wheat-growing areas, welcomed the moisture, although experts said more rain or snow would be needed to ensure healthy crops.

Meanwhile, in the Southeast, a "rich supply of Gulf moisture" will drive heavy rainfall from the Florida Panhandle east to the Carolinas on Saturday, the National Weather Service advisory said.

HP shares jump on recovery hope; analysts raise price targets

(Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co shares rose as much as 11 percent on Friday after the company's better-than-expected quarterly results and forecasts prompted at least eight brokerages to raise price targets on the stock, although analysts said problems at the world's No.1 PC maker were far from over.

HP's upbeat outlook comes as the company cuts costs under Chief Executive Meg Whitman's turnaround plan in the face of falling PC sales and slowing corporate IT spending.

"Although a number of businesses remain under pressure, the company's blocking and tackling is improving, and the likelihood of the bottom falling out appears diminished," UBS Investment Research analyst Steven Milunovich said in a note.

Milunovich upgraded his rating on the stock to "neutral" and raised his price target to $17 from $12.

HP shares were up 11.05 percent at $18.99 in early trading after hitting a high of $19.04. They have outperformed all other Dow Jones Industrial Average constituents this year.

Before Friday's gains, the stock was up about 20 percent since the beginning of the year, helped partly by a buyout offer for rival Dell Inc.

HP, like other PC makers, has been hammered as consumers turn to tablets and other mobile devices. Underscoring the severity of the industry's woes, Dell on Tuesday reported a 31 percent drop in profit as sales fell in virtually every major business division.

In addition, HP has suffered internal turmoil with a failed spin-off attempt, a botched acquisition and two CEOs losing their jobs.

J.P. Morgan Securities analyst Mark Moskowitz, who raised his price target on HP stock by $1 to $22, said the company's results and outlook signaled that the worst may be over, but added that there was room for plenty of work to be done.

Whitman, who took over the reins at HP over a year ago, plans to cut an estimated 29,000 jobs, or about 10 percent of the workforce, over the next two years. She has also reversed a decision to spin off HP's PC division.

"We have a long way to go... this is a multi-year journey to the turnaround," Whitman said in an interview to CNBC on Friday.

She had last year warned of a tough 2013, with earnings set to decline steeply, but said on Friday revenue growth is likely to return in 2014.

Eight brokers, including Jefferies & Co, RBC Capital Markets, Evercore Partners and BMO Capital Markets and Credit Suisse also increased their price targets on HP's stock by an average of $4.19.

But some analysts remained more skeptical than the others.

"While consensus will likely view the unchanged FY guidance as conservative after a stronger-than expected H1, we continue to see headwinds," Jefferies' Peter Misek said.

Deutsche Bank's Chris Whitmore, raised his forecast on the company's shares based on improved earnings outlook, but has a $12 target -- well below HP's current valuation.

Whitmore rates HP a "sell" and said he remained negative, citing continued revenue losses and a weak economy.

"We remain concerned about ongoing weak printer unit shipments and the structural decline of this market, ongoing deterioration across the PC industry on both a unit and pricing basis, poor bookings performance and future contract losses in Services...", he said in a client note.

HP derived over 17 percent of its second quarter revenue from sales of printers, copiers and related services -- a business that has lately borne the brunt of slowing corporate spending.
