Some of you might be familiar with Sony's earlier struggles to successfully (and in a timely manner) deliver Google's Ice Cream Sandwich to a slew of Xperia handsets. And, as we all know, Android 4.0's no longer the freshest treat around, thus the Walkman maker will now have to answer all the Jelly Bean questions to come. The first one to do so was a resident Sony mobile expert on the company's UK Facebook page, revealing that the Xperia Arc S and the itty-bitty Xperia Mini Pro won't be receiving the latest and greatest OS from Mountain View. Meanwhile, he also stated there's nothing buttery in the works for the elegant Xperia S, though he did say "ICS should now be approved" for the device. Perhaps this is a sign it's time to start looking for an upgrade, no?

Officials: Uganda Ebola outbreak kills 14

KAMPALA, Uganda?? The deadly Ebola virus has killed 14 people in western Uganda this month, Ugandan health officials said on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation about the cause of a strange disease that had many people fleeing their homes.

The officials and a World Health Organization representative told a news conference in Kampala Saturday that there is "an outbreak of Ebola" in Uganda.

"Laboratory investigations done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute...have confirmed that the strange disease reported in Kibaale is indeed Ebola hemorrhagic fever," the Ugandan government and WHO said in joint statement.

Kibaale is a district in midwestern Uganda, where people in recent weeks have been troubled by a mysterious illness that seemed to have come from nowhere. Ugandan health officials had been stumped as well, and spent weeks conducting laboratory tests that were at first inconclusive.

On Friday, Joaquim Saweka, the WHO representative in Uganda, told The Associated Press that investigators were "not so sure" it was Ebola, and a Ugandan health official dismissed the possibility of Ebola as merely a rumor. It appears firm evidence of Ebola was clinched overnight.

Health officials told reporters in Kampala that the 14 dead were among 20 reported with the disease. Two of the infected have been isolated for examination by researchers and health officials. A clinical officer and, days later, her 4-month-old baby died from the disease caused by the Ebola virus, officials said.

Officials urged Ugandans to be calm, saying a national emergency taskforce had been set up to stop the disease from spreading far and wide.

There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, and in Uganda, where in 2000 the disease killed 224 people and left hundreds more traumatized, it resurrects terrible memories. There have been isolated cases since, such as in 2007 when an outbreak of a new strain of Ebola killed at least 37 people in Bundibugyo, a remote district close to the Congolese border, but none as deadly as in 2000.

Ebola, which manifests itself as a hemorrhagic fever, is highly infectious and kills quickly. It was first reported in 1976 in Congo and is named for the river where it was recognized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A CDC factsheet on Ebola says the disease is "characterized by fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, sore throat, and weakness, followed by diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. A rash, red eyes, hiccups and internal and external bleeding may be seen in some patients."

Scientists don't know the natural reservoir of the virus, but they suspect the first victim in an Ebola outbreak gets infected through contact with an infected animal, such as a monkey.

The virus can be transmitted through direct contact with the blood or secretions of an infected person, or objects that have been contaminated with infected secretions. During communal funerals, for example, when the bereaved come into contact with an Ebola victim, the virus can be contracted, officials said, warning against unnecessary contact with suspected cases of Ebola.

In Kibaale, some villagers had started abandoning their homes in recent weeks to escape what they thought was an illness that had something to do with bad luck, because people were quickly falling ill and dying, and there was no immediate explanation, officials said.

Officials said now that they've verified Ebola in the area they can concentrate on controlling the disease. Ebola patients were being treated at the only major hospital in Kibaale, said Stephen Byaruhanga, the district's health secretary.

"Being a strange disease, we were shocked to learn that it was Ebola," Byaruhanga said. "Our only hope is that in the past when Ebola broke out in other parts of Uganda it was controlled."

The challenge, he said, was retaining the services of all the nurses and doctors who are being asked to risk their lives in order to look after the sick.

"Their lives are at stake," he said.

Officials also worry that other villagers suffering from other diseases might be afraid to visit the hospital for fear of catching Ebola, he said.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The wife of Trayvon Martin's shooter has entered a plea of not guilty on a perjury charge.

Shellie Zimmerman will be arraigned Tuesday in central Florida after a judge said she lied about her and husband George Zimmerman's finances during a bond hearing.

Shellie Zimmerman was arrested June 12 and released on bond the same day.

Her attorney Kelly Sims entered the written plea Friday and also waived Zimmerman's right to appear in court.

George Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in Martin's shooting. He was initially granted $150,000 bond and released. But a judge revoked that bond last month after state attorneys argued that Zimmerman and his wife lied about money raised from a website.

He has since been freed on a new $1 million bond.

Dairy researchers identify bacterial spoilers in milk

ScienceDaily (July 20, 2012) ? Our days of crying over spoiled milk could be over, thanks to Cornell food scientists.

Milk undergoes heat treatment -- pasteurization -- to kill off microbes that can cause food spoilage and disease, but certain bacterial strains can survive this heat shock as spores and cause milk to curdle in storage.

Researchers in the Milk Quality Improvement Program at Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have identified the predominant spore-forming bacteria in milk and their unique enzyme activity, knowledge that can now be used to protect the quality and shelf life of dairy products.

"Control of food spoilage is critical in a world that needs to feed 7 billion people," said Martin Wiedmann, food science professor and study co-author. "Approximately 25 percent of post-harvest food is spoiled by microbes before it is consumed."

The study, published in the March issue of Applied Environmental Microbiology by the lab of Wiedmann and Kathryn Boor, the Ronald P. Lynch Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, identified the predominant strains of spore-forming bacteria, which can foul milk and other food products. The culprits, Paenibacillus bacteria, are ubiquitous in nature and cause off-flavors in a variety of foods and curdling in dairy products.

As spores, the bacteria can survive in dormant form for years despite the best practices in cleaning, processing and packaging.

In fact, the bacteria may be uniquely adapted to overcome the twin tactics of dairy protection: pasteurization followed by refrigeration. According to co-author and research support specialist Nicole Martin, the spores are not only resistant to heat, the small jolt of heat during pasteurization may actually stimulate them to germinate. Some can reproduce in refrigerated dairy products at temperatures that would stymy other types of bacteria.

"We studied 1,288 bacterial isolates in raw milk, pasteurized milk and the dairy farm environment; however, only a handful of strains accounted for 80 percent of the spore-formers present," said Wiedmann. "They grow well in milk -- and possibly other foods -- at temperatures as low as 43 F, and we can identify Paenibacillus because of their uniquely high galactosidase enzyme activity at 32 C."

They also investigated how pasteurization affects the presence of such bacteria.

Concerns about food safety have prompted many dairy processors to increase pasteurization temperatures above the 161 F minimum set by the government. Anecdotal reports, however, suggested this practice actually led to more spoilage once the products were refrigerated.

Tallying bacterial numbers throughout the refrigerated shelf life of milk pasteurized at two different temperatures -- 169 F and 175 F -- the Wiedmann-Boor lab found that lowering the temperature significantly reduced bacterial growth during refrigerated storage, especially by 21 days after pasteurization.

The findings are already being applied in the field. The Wiedmann-Boor Lab was enlisted by Upstate Niagara, a cooperative of more than 360 dairy farm families throughout western New York, to further improve the quality of their award-winning milk by assessing milk samples for spore-formers.

Data on samples that contained spore-forming bacteria are now being analyzed using DNA fingerprinting to identify the types of organisms present and where they might have come from.

Martin said she hopes the collaborative project will become a model for how to approach spore-forming bacteria in individual dairy processing plants.

"It's one of the strengths we have at Cornell -- we are able to do advanced research and immediately turn it around to help the industry," Martin said.

IPM welcomes Barry Fleming to the WH&S consulting and training team. Barry is a ?through and through Irishman? who relocated to Australia two years ago to start a new life In addition to a good dose of Irish charm, Barry has significant Australian and Irish experience in construction, manufacturing and general WH&S. He has seven years? experience working in WH&S roles in both countries. He has a Bachelor of Science with a major in Occupational Safety and Health. Barry is experienced in auditing (trained lead auditor), WH&S management system development and implementation, hazard inspections and management, developing risk registers, WH&S consultation training and committee development, WH&S legislative compliance audits, induction and training.

Since our last edition, IPM has grown our Launceston office by one member ? Peter Kelbassa. Peter is a highly experienced safety trainer who has joined us after 12 years working with Queensland mining clients. Peter is a former ambulance and rescue officer with extensive background in work at heights, confined spaces, permit to work, low voltage rescue, emergency planning and first aid. Peter has prompted IPM to dive into the high-risk work and compliance training fields. Please contact us if Peter could assist you in managing these risks better.

The third bloke added to the IPM team is the dynamic Oliver Bodak, Exercise Physiologist, Ergonomic Consultant and Rehabilitation Provider. Oliver has been working in Queensland?? with Kinetic Health. Oliver is also a former Ambulance Officer with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and a former Australian Triathlon Team member. He?s now a keen road cyclist, so if you have any need for fitness advice or workplace health and fitness programs, along with our wonderful Kirby Dillon, IPM has a dynamic team of ergonomic, manual handling and fit for work consultants.

In addition, we are proud to announce that IPM will be sponsoring one of the WorkSafe Tasmania Awards. As a show of commitment and encouragement for all Tasmanian enterprises to manage risks well, we are sponsoring the IPM Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue. One great aspect of being in the consulting business is that jobs come along that are an unexpected delight. In March, Martyn and Peter travelled to the west coast for the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources to assess the WH&S of the Wilderness Railway. This is a wonderful Tasmanian travel attraction that needs to be experienced to be believed.

On the 17th of March we supported the Tasmanian Minerals Council by attending the Tas Minerals Expo where we held an information and marketing stall. IPM staff Caroline Langley, Matt Gmelig and Peter Kelbassa provided great advice and demonstrations of noise and dust monitoring equipment, along with mines rescue and safety.

At the Expo the team?s message focused on the importance of Strategic and Whole of Site risk management, and getting the priorities and programs right for the range of site risks such as lead, dust, silica, diesel particulate and other hazardous substances. IPM?s emphasis on thoughtful and risk prioritised monitoring was well received and struck up some useful conversations for participants.

With IPM?s extensive and growing Occupational Hygiene services for the mining and minerals processing sector, Matt Gmelig has taken on a Specialist Consultant role to co-ordinate, improve and extend our work with mining and minerals clients. Parting Schotts: Union men's hockey announces 2012-13 recruit class (with videos)

The Union men?s hockey team announced its 2012-13 recruit class today.

There are six players in the class, four of the m forwards.

The forwards are left winger Matt Wilkins of the Alberta Junior League?s Brooks Bandits, David Roy from the Brockville Braves of the Central Canada Hockey League, Nick Cruice from the Eastern Junior Hockey League?s South Shore Kings and Theo DiPauli of the U.S. Hockey League?s Chicago Steel.

The other recruits are defensemen ? Tim Boyle of Nobles Prep and Sebastien Gingras of Brockville.

This is the first recruiting class for head coach Rick Bennett and his assistants, Joe Dumais and Jason Tapp.

The Dutchmen lost their top two scorers from last season. Kelly Zajac graduated, and Jeremy Welsh gave up his final year of eligibility when he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes. They ombined for 35 goals and 51 assists in helping the Dutchmen to a memorable season. Union won its second straight ECAC Hockey regular-season title, it?s first ECACH tournament championship and it?s first NCAA hockey tournament East Regional title. The Dutchmen lost to Ferris State in the Frozen Four semifinal.

?You always want to try to replace the class that left with a better class coming in,? said Bennett, who guided the Dutchmen to a 26-8-7 record in his first season as head coach after six years as assistant/associate head coach. ?That?s how your program gets better. We won?t know that until after four years. Obviously, we didn?t plan on Jeremy Welsh leaving. But with him graduating this summer and the year he had [27 goals, 17 assists], he made the decision [to leave] and it was the right decision to go.

?The unexpected is always going to happen. It?s starting to happen at Union College now, so it?s stuff we have to be prepared for. I thought Joe and Jason were prepared for that, and that helped us.?

The 21-year-old Wilkins led the AJHL in scoring with 34 goals and 65 assists, and was a finalist for league MVP. In his two years with the Bandits, Wilkins had 64 goals and 122 assists. He scored 28 career power-play goals.

?I?m not going to put the stipulation where he has to be a point producer,? Bennett said. ?People seem to forget that Kelly Zajac was a 20-point guy his freshman year. Matt Wilkins is going to come in and contribute right away, but within the confines of our team. We?re really forward to him playing a top-nine role.?

Roy, 20, was the Braves? second-leading scorer last season with 32 goals and 37 assists. He led the Braves in power-play goals (12), power-play points (19) and short-handed goals (three).
?We were looking to bring in a couple of guys that could play on the top two lines,? said Dumais, who previously was an assistant coach at Connecticut. ?I think a lot of that comes from within your program, too. There are a lot of the freshmen and sophomores, right now, who are looking to step up and fill those shoes, as well.?

Cruice had 19 goals and 34 assists last season. His 53 points was fourth best on the Kings. He was expected to come to Union for the 2013-14 season. But when Andrew Johnston, a forward from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League?s Humboldt Broncos, decided to skip college and sign a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, Bennett asked Cruice to come in a year early.

?It?s always nice to have a player who wants to be in your program, and has tremendous character,? Bennett said of the 19-year-old Cruice. ?The biggest the thing that we feel is going to help our program is his character. He?s a very good hockey player, and we look forward to working him for four years.?

Injuries limited the 19-year-old DiPauli to just 46 games played over the last two seasons.

Boyle, who was selected in the fourth round of the NHL draft June 23 by the Ottawa Senators, is the brother of New York Rangers center Brian Boyle. Tim Boyle, who is 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, played at Nobles Prep. He had six goals and 12 assists in 24 games.
?Tim was drafted in the fourth round, but I?m sure he?ll tell you that it?s just a beginning,? Bennett said. ?His brother went through it being a first-rounder, and he found out that it took him four years at Boston College and then some years in the minors to get to where he is today. That?s nice to have a family and a brother who has gone through it, so he knows he can pass on to Tim that it?s just a beginning.?

Gingras is the son of Gaston Gingras, who played 10 seasons in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues.

Gingras, a teammate of Roy, was Brockville?s top defensive scorer with 12 goals and 31 assists. A right-handed shot, the 6-2, 190-pound Gingras had 17 power-play points. Union lacked a right-handed shot from the point on the power play, and the coaching staff believes Gingras will be a force there.

?He?s got a great shot,? Dumais said. ?He gets up in the play. He?s big, he?s skilled, he can run a power play. We?re very excited to have him come in.?

In A Key Shift, Pinterest Is Leaving Palo Alto And ... - Business Insider

After weeks of rumors, it's really happening: Pinterest, the visual interest-sharing network, has packed up its Palo Alto office and is moving to San Francisco.

Sarah Tavel, an international growth executive at Pinterest, noted the move on Twitter and confirmed that Pinterest's new office would be in San Francisco.

TechCrunch first reported that Pinterest was looking at office space in San Francisco last month?specifically 410 Townsend, an office near San Francisco's Caltrain station, a desirable neighborhood for startups.

There are two factors driving Pinterest to San Francisco?a push and a pull.

The push is simply the lack of room to grow in Palo Alto. Facebook got its start in downtown Palo Alto, but rapidly outgrew a series of offices along University Avenue. First it moved to an office park near Stanford University, and then it left Palo Alto altogether for the former Sun Microsystems campus in Menlo Park. Google and PayPal likewise got their start downtown but couldn't stay as they expanded.

Palantir, a secretive data-mining firm, is taking most of the space available in downtown Palo Alto. (It recruits heavily from Stanford.)

LinkedIn currently lists 44 members working at Pinterest, and it's hiring swiftly after raising $100 million in May.

The pull is the desire for talent of all sorts?engineers, designers, and dealmakers alike?to live in San Francisco. Tavel, for example, lives in San Francisco and crowed about how the move would shorten her commute.

"Pinterest is moving to me!" she told a friend on Twitter.

We haven't been able to pin down Pinterest's new address. The company's privacy policy still lists its old High Street address in Palo Alto, as does its registration with the California Secretary of State's office.?Barry Schnitt, Pinterest's recently hired head of communications, didn't respond to a Facebook message asking for comment on the move.

Well. I hope everyone had a spectacular Fourth of July for those who are Americans! I know I certainly did.

my family always kicks off the Fourth on the third of July with a huge reunion. Surprisingly, I actually like this family reunion. We always have home made root-beer, TONS of food, and a few fun games. it?s nice to catch up with the family members you know and like.

I say ?know? because my family is so large, half our family probably doesn?t know the other half. It?s entertaining when a family member comes up to me, calls me by name, asks me how my art/schooling/life is going, then leaves without me ever figuring out their name or if they?re really family.

We get a lot of friends coming to our reunions as well. This year, I had my Laxer Bro tag along for fun. The fam. had fun heckling him. He took it pretty well. My nephews all ran up to him the second he got there, too. Heck, my youngest nephew could say his name before mine. They had fun playing together and having us watch them go down a giant-bouncy-slide-water-thing.

The actual Fourth typically starts off with many of my family members running the local races. I usually participate; however, this time I was helping my mom hand out water to the runners who came by our house. Then we all cram into cars and take off to the park to catch the parade. It?s dee beeeeest! Seriously. Usually I can?t stand parades, but with my town, it?s something different. I know half of it is because I am biased and know the majority of the people in the parade, but the other half is because I always get a kick out of the local? ideas and jokes everyone comes up with for the floats.

The majority of the rest of the day is spent at the epic craft fair in the park. There are also a lot of fun little attractions for the kids to do. Snow Basin even brought down actual snow from the mountain. WOOT! Snow. In the park. In the middle of July. A snowball fight definitely ensued.

My family always has another B-B-Q to follow. This year, we all had a water fight. Sadly, we could only let off small fireworks (like snakes and poppers) due to the major fire danger this season. But, the town let off the big ones!

Laxer Bro and a group of friends and I all went to our park where the fireworks were going to be let off to enjoy the show. The cool thing about our fireworks is that they?re shot off right above the park, so they burst right over everyone?s head. Oh, and cue the music! The town always has patriotic music playing loud enough to hear through the blasts and bangs of the firework show. Just after the fireworks ended, it started to rain. I call that a perfect ending to a day. I love the rain!

On a different note, I?m looking for fun suggestions to keep me very busy over the next two and a half weeks! So if you?ve been somewhere fun or done something fun lately, let me know so I can try it out! Laxer Bro is out of town during that time period, and I need to keep my mind active. So lemme have it!
