A Contemporary Chinese Opera House

Bing Thom has a confession to make about his design for Hong Kong?s new Xiqu Centre.

?I broke the rules,? says the 72-year-old Canadian architect, who was in the city earlier this month to unveil his winning proposal for the 1,780-seat, HK$2.7 billion (US$350 million) center for Chinese opera, set to be the first of 17 West Kowloon Cultural District venues when it opens in late 2015.

That rule-breaking may well have been why Mr. Thom and his Hong Kong-based partner, Ronald Lu, won out over 50 other firms competing for a piece of the cultural district.

The original brief called for two opera theaters, a 280-seat teahouse and educational facilities. Mr. Thom added a large public courtyard with open access from each corner of the building, which he says will make the Xiqu Centre a space for the kind of rich street life that he feels is becoming increasingly rare in major cities.

?In today?s society there is a tendency towards specialization and a tremendous amount of balkanization,? he says. ?There is no opportunity for the accidental meeting of things that are different.?

By contrast, Mr. Thom?s design for the Xiqu Centre is meant to foster serendipitous encounters, with people moving between its venues by means of shortcuts.

?The transition between the spaces is what?s important,? he says. ?It?s the space between the notes that makes the music.?

The loose, informal feel of Mr. Thom?s ?spaces in between? will extend to the design of the theaters. Cantonese opera is traditionally performed in temporary bamboo structures on the street, where audiences chat and mingle during performances that can last up to several hours.

Mr. Thom?s proposed interior will pay homage to the form?s roots: by day, a series of green spaces inspired by Chinese gardens will recreate an outdoor atmosphere, while at night, ?the curtains come down to create a more formal atmosphere,? he says.

Meanwhile, the building?s billowing exterior is meant to evoke a theater curtain being pulled open. The center will be clad in translucent vertical strips that during the day will flood its interior, including the performance spaces, with natural light, and allow it to glow like a lantern after dark.

The Xiqu Centre will be Hong Kong?s first theater designed specifically for Chinese opera, an art form whose popularity has dwindled since its mid-20th-century heyday, when it enjoyed mainstream success both on stage and on film.

?There are no contemporary?xiqu?theaters. We?re going into unknown territory,? the architect says. ?We?re trying to capture the soul and the essence of what this art form is about, while giving it this contemporary expression of ambiguity.?

The Xiqu Centre will set the tone for the West Kowloon Cultural District, whose other venues have yet to be designed. According to Michael Lynch, the district?s chief executive, a similarly ambitious design can be expected for M+, a 60,000-square-meter contemporary art museum that will be completed in 2017.

?We are in a position to adopt some out-of-the-box thinking, but we won?t be going for gimmicks,? says Mr. Lynch, who previously ran London?s South Bank Centre and the Sydney Opera House. A shortlist of proposed designs for M+, unveiled at the same time as the winning proposal for the Xiqu Centre, includes major international firms like Japan?s Shigeru Ban, Italy?s Renzo Piano and Swiss-based Herzog & de Meuron. The winner will be announced in June.

Mr. Lynch notes that the district?s Foster + Partners master plan will help keep excesses in check.

?We?re trying to resist each building screaming for attention,? he says. ?We have 15 [other] cultural venues and some of them will be quite functional.?

Check Your Ego At the Door ? Sales Coach AZ

No one is perfect, and growth is stunted by pride, so set your pride aside.

A company sales position requires more reflection and focus on self-improvement than any other position.? The market changes constantly and so must sales people, however, like most people, we are all apprehensive towards change, especially when we have been successful in the past.

We try to believe that what created success today, will create success tomorrow.? What got you to the top before may not get you there in the future.? Besides I don?t like to think of it as change; it?s about improving. I was just reading John C. Maxwell?s Self Improvement 101 and it reminded me that it?s not about change; it?s a way to improve.

Plan 1: Focus on self-development and not self-fulfillment.? Reaching your sales goal is self-fulfilling.? Has it really improved your sales skills?? Have you reached your sales potential, if not, what will you do to get there?

Plan 2: ?Reach your potential by having the mindset of a continual learner.? This is one of the first characteristics I look for when hiring a sales person.? What books have you read about your profession?? What seminars or workshops have you attended?? No matter how many years you have sold you can always learn something new.

Plan 3: Take time to read, listen or reflect. Self-Improvement must be planned for; the same way you develop a business plan.? Make an appointment with yourself every day or every week to take time to read about your profession, listen to webinars, or reflect on what good and bad things happened during the week, and what can be improved.? Bullet- point your weekly activities, and then bullet point lessons learned.? If you learned nothing, you?re doing something wrong.

A great way to improve yourself is to teach your peers something you?re learning. Conversely, you can learn a lot from your peers, even if you do not think they are as proficient as you.? I will never forget my younger brother, a high school All-American wrestler, asking for my advice about wrestling.? He not only asked me, he asked everyone.? ?He could learn something from anyone, younger or older.

Do you have a mentor or coach that can help you improve??

Nobody likes to be criticized, and many of us love sales, because we like to be our own boss.? However, we all need some coaching and/or mentoring. All the great golfers have coaches because they cannot see everything themselves.

Aren?t we the same??

Harvey McKay, author of How to Swim with the Sharks and owner of a $100M printing business stated that he had seven different business coaches.

Call me today to see how I can help you improve your sales.

Warriors whip short-handed Celtics 101-83

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? What a December to remember for the Golden State Warriors.

Stephen Curry had 22 points and nine assists, David Lee scored 20 points and the Warriors whipped the short-handed Boston Celtics 101-83 on Saturday night to close out a memorable month.

Golden State (21-10) finished December with a 12-4 record and has at least 20 wins before New Year's Day for the first time since 1980.

"What more is there to say?" Lee said. "Happy New Year."

First-round pick Harrison Barnes added 15 points and eight rebounds to help Golden State build a 20-point lead in the second quarter and cruise most of the way. The Warriors tied the 1961-62 team ? when the franchise was still in Philadelphia ? with 12 wins in December.

"The bottom line is it's been a great year for us," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "2012 has been real good to us. We will put it behind us and now look forward to doing great things in 2013."

The Celtics, meanwhile, are hardly ringing in the new year in style.

Courtney Lee had 18 points and five rebounds starting in place of Rajon Rondo, who was a late scratch for Boston because of a bruised right thigh and hip. Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Rondo will be a game-time decision at the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night, but he was far more concerned about the team's horrendous shooting and offensive flow.

Paul Pierce finished with 13 points on 4-for-20 shooting, Jason Terry scored 13 points on 6-for-19 shooting and both were taken out with 4:19 remaining and the game well out of reach.

The Celtics (14-15) have lost six of eight to fall below .500 for the first time in almost two months. Combined with Thursday night's 106-77 loss at the Los Angeles Clippers, Boston has been outscored by 47 points the last two games.

"We got to figure out who we want to be," Pierce said. "Do we want to be a defense-first team? If we're not going to be a defensive team, we got to be a better offensive team. It's got to be something. We still got to find our way."

After beating the Philadelphia 76ers at home Friday night, the Warriors continued to pound Eastern Conference competition. Golden State outshot Boston 51 to 36 percent from the floor, the lowest an opponent has shot against them all season.

The Warriors also had a season-high with 10 blocked shots ? five by rookie Festus Ezeli ? and improved to 13-2 against the East this season.

And this one wasn't even close.

Curry shook off the double teams the Celtics threw his way on most pick-and-rolls and found Lee and others for easy dunks. At one point, the Warriors scored 11 straight and later took a 19-9 lead that got Rivers ranting and raving at his players to pick up the intensity.

After the Celtics started to close the gap, Jackson switched to the three-guard lineup of Curry, Klay Thompson and Jarrett Jack. The trio shredded Boston's depleted backcourt, with Curry and Thompson each connecting from beyond the arc to cap a 21-7 run that gave Golden State a 50-30 lead late in the second quarter.

"This was huge," Curry said. "You're just trying to keep the momentum going."

The Celtics simply had no rhythm offensively and no pressure defensively without Rondo, the three-time All-Star point guard who had started the first 24 games this season. Rivers said Rondo was hurt at the Clippers but doesn't think the injury is anything serious.

Pierce's 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter highlighted a brief burst that brought Boston to 78-70. The highlights for the Celtics ended there, with the Warriors' swarming Boston defensively to build back a 22-point lead.

"We got to keep working at this," said Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, who had 6 points and three rebounds in 23 minutes. "This is where you start to see who's with you. This is when you see who really wants it, who really wants to get down and work and grind for it. We're about to find it out."

NOTES: SG Leandro Barbosa is expected to rejoin the Celtics at Sacramento after missing four straight games for personal reasons. ... Boston fell to 5-10 on the road. ... Raiders WR Jacoby Ford was among those in attendance.

Last-minute fiscal cliff talks in Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate leaders groped for a last-minute compromise Saturday to avoid middle-class tax increases and possibly prevent deep spending cuts at the dawn of the new year as President Barack Obama warned that failure could mean a "self-inflicted wound to the economy."

Obama chastised lawmakers in his weekly radio and Internet address for waiting until the last minute to try and avoid a "fiscal cliff," yet said there was still time for an agreement. "We cannot let Washington politics get in the way of America's progress," he said as the hurry-up negotiations unfolded.

For all the recent expressions of urgency, bargaining took place by phone, email and paper in a Capitol nearly empty except for tourists. Alone among top lawmakers, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell spent the day in his office.

In the Republicans' weekly address, Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri cited a readiness to compromise. "Divided government is a good time to solve hard problems ? and in the next few days, leaders in Washington have an important responsibility to work together and do just that," he said.

Even so, there was no guarantee of success, and a dispute over the federal tax on large estates emerged as yet another key sticking point alongside personal income tax rates.

In a blunt challenge to Republicans, Obama said that barring a bipartisan agreement, he expected both houses to vote on his own proposal to block tax increases on all but the wealthy and simultaneously preserve expiring unemployment benefits.

Political calculations mattered as much as deep-seated differences over the issues, as divided government struggled with its first big challenge since the November elections.

Speaker John Boehner remained at arms-length, juggling a desire to avoid the fiscal cliff with his goal of winning another term as speaker when a new Congress convenes next Thursday. Any compromise legislation is certain to include higher tax rates on the wealthy, and the House GOP rank and file rejected the idea when he presented it to them as part of a final attempt to strike a more sweeping agreement with Obama.

Lawmakers have until the new Congress convenes to pass any compromise, and even the calendar mattered. Democrats said they had been told House Republicans might reject a deal until after Jan. 1, to avoid a vote to raise taxes before they had technically gone up and then vote to cut taxes after they had risen.

Nor was any taxpayer likely to feel any adverse impact if legislation is signed and passed into law in the first two or three days of 2013 instead of the final hours of 2012.

Gone was the talk of a grand bargain of spending cuts and additional tax revenue in which the two parties would agree to slash deficits by trillions of dollars over a decade.

Now negotiators had a more cramped goal of preventing additional damage to the economy in the form of higher taxes across the board ? with some families facing increases measured in the thousands of dollars ? as well as cuts aimed at the Pentagon and hundreds of domestic programs.

Republicans said they were willing to bow to Obama's call for higher taxes on the wealthy as part of a deal to prevent them from rising on those less well-off.

Democrats said Obama was sticking to his campaign call for tax increases above $250,000 in annual income, even though he said in recent negotiations he said he could accept $400,000. There was no evidence of agreement even at the higher level.

There were indications from Republicans that estate taxes might hold more significance for them than the possibility of higher rates on income.

One senior Republican, Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, said late Friday he was "totally dead set" against Obama's estate tax proposal, and as if to reinforce the point, Blunt mentioned the issue before any other in his broadcast remarks. "Small businesses and farm families don't know how to deal with the unfair death tax_a tax that the president and congressional leaders have threatened to expand to include even more family farms and even more small businesses," he said.

Several officials said Republicans want to leave the tax at 35 percent after exempting the first $5 million in estate value. Officials said the White House wants a 45 percent tax after a $3.5 million exemption. Without any action by Congress, it would climb to a 55 percent tax after a $1 million exemption on Jan. 1.

Democrats stressed their unwillingness to make concessions on both income taxes and the estate tax, and said they hoped Republicans would choose which mattered more to them.

Officials said any compromise was likely to ease the impact of the alternative minimum tax, originally designed to make sure that millionaires did not escape taxation. If left unchanged, it could hit an estimated 28 million households for the first time in 2013, with an average increase of more than $3,000.

Taxes on dividends and capital gains are also involved in the talks, as well as a series of breaks for businesses and others due to expire at the first of the year.

Obama and congressional Democrats are insisting on an extension of long-term unemployment benefits that are expiring for about 2 million jobless individuals.

Leaders in both parties also hope to prevent a 27 percent fee cut from taking effect on Jan. 1 for doctors who treat Medicare patients.

There was also discussion of a short-term extension of expiring farm programs, in part to prevent a spike in milk prices at the first of the year. It wasn't clear if that was a parallel effort to the cliff talks or had become wrapped into them.

Across-the-board spending cuts that comprise part of the cliff were a different matter.

Republicans say Boehner will insist that they will begin to take effect unless negotiators agreed to offset them with specified savings elsewhere.

That would set the stage for the next round of brinkmanship ? a struggle over Republican calls for savings from Medicare, Medicaid and other federal benefit programs.

The Treasury's ability to borrow is expected to expire in late winter or early spring, and without an increase in the $16.4 trillion limit, the government would face its first-ever default. Republicans have said they will use administration requests for an extension as leverage to win cuts in spending.

Ironically, it was just such a maneuver more than a year ago that set the stage for the current crisis talks over the fiscal cliff.

Oil drilling in Hermosa Beach? [2012 Newsmaker]

E&B Natural Resources of Bakersfield filed its application last month to drill for oil and gas, continuing the nearly 20-year saga of whether or not an oil company will be allowed to dig wells at the city maintenance yard.

E&B arrived on the scene in March as part of a settlement between the city and Macpherson Oil, which claimed Hermosa Beach breached its contract in 1998 when the City Council determined that drilling for oil could be unsafe. Macpherson was seeking up to $750 million in damages and the trial was set to begin in the spring. However, in a deal negotiated to avoid major liability for the city, E&B paid $30 million to Macpherson to have the opportunity to convince voters to support the oil project, and residents will go to the polls sometime in 2014 to decide.

If voters reject the oil proposal, then the city will pay $17.5 million to E&B, which the city would likely finance through a multi-year bond measure. If the voters approve the oil project, the city will owe $3.5 million so long as the project is also approved by the California Coastal Commission, the State Lands Commission, the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the California Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources.

Residents last voted in 1995 to reinstate the no oil drilling ban. In fact, since 1932, the city has had four votes to decide the fate of oil drilling within city limits.

In 1932, 1958 and 1995, voters shot down oil drilling in the city. The lone vote to support oil drilling and rescind the oil drilling ban came in 1984.

Last week, the city informed E&B that its application needed more information related to parking, lighting, storage, storm water mitigation plans and the company?s proposal for amending the Coastal Land Use Plan. E&B President Steve Layton said that additional material will be provided to the city soon. The city will begin the environmental review process required by the California Environmental Quality Act.

E&B Natural Resources President Steve Layton. Photo by Ed Pilolla

The application breaks the proposed oil drilling project into four phases, including demolishing the site, initial construction and test phase, final construction phase, and a final drilling and production phase.

E&B is hoping to build an underground cellar with up to 30 wells at the city maintenance yard at Valley Drive and Sixth Street. The wells would be able to produce 8,000 barrels of oil and 2.5 million cubic feet of natural gas per day for 30-35 years, according to the application. E&B wants to build an underground oil pipeline from the maintenance yard to 190th Street and into Redondo Beach and Torrance to oil distribution locations.

In a noise impact study included in the application, Behrens and Associates of Inglewood found that noise levels during drilling and production would not exceed an oil code standard of 45 decibels at any residential property in the surrounding area. An air quality impact analysis said construction activities at the site would primarily consist of dust and exhaust emissions that could exceed the South Coast Air Quality District?s standard for significance.

A group of residents called Stop Oil in Hermosa is opposing the oil project. They have raised concerns over property values, traffic, public safety, pollution, ground water contamination and noise. Layton has said the project would be conducted in an environmentally safe manner. A series of public hearings will be held during the environmental review process that will allow residents to voice their concerns or support for the project.

Windows 8 App Store Now Has 35,000 Apps

Posted: December 29, 2012

The Microsoft Windows 8 app store has only been on our radar since October 30 but already it has racked up 35,000 different applications.

According to tracking website MetroStore Scanner, the Windows 8 app platform has added 14,57 apps in the past 35 days. The Windows 8 app ecosystem now features 35,167 desktop based applications.

While 35,167 apps are available for Windows 8 only 22,000 are available in the US.

Microsoft?s new platform still lags far behind Google Android?s Play Store or the Apple iOS? App Store, however it is adding 415 apps per day.

At current growth rates the Windows 8 app store should reach 50,000 programs by February 1.

The app store debuted with 10,000 apps on October 30 but quickly added 3,000 more apps during the first week of release.

While 50,000 apps is nothing to balk at, that number is still far below the 100,000 mark that Microsoft?s sales and marketing vice president originally said the company was aiming for upon release.

Microsoft also predicted that it would sell 400 million Windows 8 devices by July, should sales pick up and that number be met the company?s goals of 100,000 apps could occur sooner rather than later.

The mobile market for devices has continued to cannibalize desktop and traditional notebook sales and ultrabooks with their ultra-high pricing have failed to buoy much of the mobile tech sector. Should tablets and smartphones continue to further erode away at traditional computing we could see Microsoft struggling to reach 100,000 apps.

Do you think Microsoft is doing a good job in promoting the Windows 8 app ecosystem or have mobile developers already done enough damage?

'Parental Guidance' Movie Review: Great Family Entertainment ...

You'll be forgiven if you think "Parental Guidance," a comedy starring Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei seems to follow a standard formula of old vs. new. The producers of the film aren't apologetic about it. They even promote the movie as Old School vs. New School in parenting.

As the movie starts, Crystal's character, Artie Decker, a baseball announcer, is having career problems. The last thing Artie wants to do is spend time with his grandchildren. But his wife, Diane, portrayed by Bette Midler, wants a chance to no longer be her grandkids' second favorite grandmother.

When the grandparents arrive in the Atlanta suburb that is home to their grandchildren, the differences in parental philosophies becomes very clear. They have arrived in a place where children never hear the word "no," but instead are taught to consider the consequences of their actions, as their daughter, Alice Simmons, played by Tomei, instructs them in the care of their grandchildren. Games of baseball don't follow the old rules of "three strikes and you're out." Instead, everybody gets to hit, everybody gets on base and all games end in a tie. Even their daughter's leaves the technophobe grandparents like fish out of water.

The movie progresses as Artie and Diane ignore these "new school" rules and follow their "old school ways," letting their grandchildren's lives get out of control. But, like most family-friendly movies, by the end of the babysitting gig the grandchildren have learned valuable lessons ? as have their parents and grandparents.

The movie mostly redeems itself after following pretty standard plot points. Part of what makes this movie work is the portrayal of the Simmons' children by Bailey Madison, Joshua Rush and Kyle Harrison Breitkopf. They seem like real kids and not some screenwriter's odd notion of children, or mere caricatures.

I would recommend this movie to families looking for a film everyone can enjoy without worrying about bad language or violence (except for that baseball bat scene shown in all the trailers). The long winter break from school makes this a great break from everyone feeling cooped up at home, especially on foggy, rainy days like Christmas Day.

Location Shooting in Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Roswell

It's not too hard during this movie to spot Atlanta ? not to mention Alpharetta and Johns Creek ? shooting locations. Large portions of the movie were filmed in Alpharetta and other parts of North Fulton. Scenes at Artie and Diane's California home were shot at a Pebble Trail residence. Artie worked out of a California baseball stadium, ?Chukchansi Park," with the Gwinnett Braves' Coolray Field standing in for the location.

Independence High at Milton Center (Old Milton High School) served as the exterior of a speech school, music conservatory and an anchor school. And its interior offered up a speech school classroom. Even a park bench outside the school was used. A baseball field at Ocee Park was used in several scenes, and nothing was done to disguise this. Even a MARTA train was used as the grandparents and grandchildren made their way down to Perimeter Mall.

And when Tomei and Tom Everett Scott's characters went to Hilton Head Resort for the business trip out of town, they really never left North Fulton. Instead, the Country Club of Roswell doubled as the Hilton Head Island resort.

"Parental Guidance" is playing at the Beechwood Cinemas 11 and Carmike Cinema 12. It's rated PG and runs 105 minutes.

Editor?s note: As we ring out 2012, we look at 12 of our favorite stories of the year. Neal Rogers? profile of Tom Boonen?s rise, fall and triumphant return first appeared in the June 2012 issue of Velo magazine.

In the Eye of the Tornado

When Tom Boonen crossed the finish line, alone, inside the hallowed velodrome of Paris-Roubaix, he?d done much more than just win the sport?s most demanding classic.

By winning Roubaix one week after he?d won the Tour of Flanders ? and two weeks after winning both E3 Harelbeke and Ghent-Wevelgem ? the Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider had silenced his critics, once and for all, proving to the world, and to himself, that he is the best cobblestones racer of his era, and perhaps of all time.

Unlike his sprint wins at Flanders, Ghent-Wevelgem and Harelbeke, Boonen won Roubaix in dramatic style, attacking with 55km remaining and holding off all of the sport?s toughest racers save for one ? Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack-Nissan), Boonen?s long-running classics rival ? who was watching the race at home in Switzerland while nursing a surgically repaired collarbone.

With his victory, Boonen had tied Roger De Vlaeminck?s record of four Paris-Roubaix wins; he?d also become the only rider to accomplish the extraordinary Flanders-Roubaix double more than once.

But more important than any record, Boonen had come full circle. He?d closed the door on the endless question marks, implications and innuendo that suggested he?d fallen permanently from grace. He?d proven that he had not, in fact, squandered his talent, and he had not sold short the limitless career that lay before him after his breakthrough 2005 season ? a career that has been hindered by obstacles, both external and self-imposed.

An Open Letter on Marketing Tech Essentials for B2B | Business 2 ...

Online business and businesses that are online are two different things.

Many traditionally trained marketers are struggling to convert what has worked for years in the offline world into the new online environments.

They are not the same ? how can you know what will work and what won?t work on the internet?

As a marketer, the things lacking or needing enhancement for most businesses are creating and re-using content and proactively driving it out to the right audience. If you are in new business development, your job is to take leads and educate prospects, filtering them so that they move up the sales funnel closer to a sale.

B2B comms for existing customers, in a nutshell, is badly planned and poorly executed in most businesses. Don?t be like the herd.

Businesses have different user and customer groups who should be communicated to differently ? because they need different things from you. Let?s give an example: your manufacturers and suppliers need different information from your customers and prospects; if you are trading internationally, the way you work in China probably isn?t the same as with your clients in USA or Europe.

8 tech essentials for B2B marketing

  1. How are you encouraging website visitors to join your mailing list? Building your own list and growing it is the second most important function of a business to business website. [Ask us what the first is.]
  2. After joining the list and signing up, what are you doing to drive the customer deeper into using the higher features of your products and services?
  3. Ongoing communications to prospects and clients are essential. What are the useful things you could be communicating with my business and are you delivering them in the channel that I prefer (clue ? this could include RSS, email, Linked In, Twitter direct message, a G+ community). Let the customer choose how she wants to hear from you.
  4. How could you be leveraging existing customers to drive improved new business using member-get-member referrals and other incentives?
  5. Autoresponders ? for new mailing list joiners you could have a ?guide? who is there for the reader, who acts as a signpost to helpful information inside your knowledge base, who helps check they?re getting what they need from your company. The guide would email the customer with helpful information that takes them deeper into the sales funnel and closer to a purchase.
  6. STOP using FeedBurner to distribute your RSS feed from the blog. It?s unsupported and you could be leveraging the channel for marketing messages to your active users in order to drive deeper brand engagement and possibly sales.
  7. Split out your blog into separate streams so that articles automatically send to different customer and prospect groups. Each would get articles designed for that audience. Create separate news feeds for different audiences, and further use them to drive marcoms to support your business growth goals
  8. The more you blog, the bigger your archive. Readers rarely dive very deep and yet there?s probably heaps of helpful content which is being ignored. Could they be re-created into ?tip sheets?, e-books, training manuals and other support material?

As you can see we are expert content marketers and our mantra is ?write once; use three times?. The benefit you?d get from collaborating with us is that you can implement all these internally, while still dipping into our expert coaching for strategy.

Bouncing Back After an Injury ? Testimonial - Medical Fitness Pros

Getting injured while doing something you love can change a fun activity into a scary one. ?That is exactly what happened to Holly Wear from Katy, TX. ?While training for a marathon, she injured her knee. ?She came for help so she could build up the courage to do what she loved again, running.

?I developed a knee injury after training for the full marathon many years ago. The knee injury made me afraid of doing many activities that I once enjoyed. I went years without doing these activities. ? I was told that Jason worked with clients that had injuries, and I wanted help so I could start running again.?

What was your opinion of the service you?received?

?The thing that stands out the most is that getting me to enjoy activities that I once enjoyed was the most important thing to the trainer more than making money. I really felt that my best interest was at heart.?

What stands out about what you?ve learned from working with Medical Fitness Pros?

?I feel that this training was life changing for me because I was shown how to take care of my knee and strengthen it even after I was finished with my training with the personal trainer. I was given handouts on how to keep strengthening my knee so I could do these workouts at home.?

What is it that we do for you that you find the most valuable?

?The most valuable thing for me that the training did was give me my active life back. I have completed two half marathons and I?m training for my third. I now bicycle for fun and play tennis. With being shown how to strengthen my knee with things I can do at my home I?m now enjoying an active life without little worry of my knee.

?Medical fitness Pros not only works with people with injuries, I just found the best Christmas gift for my boyfriend there. They offer a golf training program for players that want to improve their game. There are not very many programs like this in Katy. This would be the best gift for someone who likes golf and has everything and who also likes a challenge.?

Are you ready to get started on your own program? ?Make sure you contact us today.

Worms turn metal into semiconductors

17 hrs.

Worms are useful in the garden and great for fish bait, but one of their talents has remained hidden ? until now. Scientists have discovered that worms can manufacture tiny semiconductors. ?

At King's College in London, researchers fed an ordinary red worm, Lumbricus rubellus, soil laced with metals. The worm produced quantum dots, nano-sized semiconductors that are used in imaging, LED technologies and solar cells. The experiment was published in the Dec. 23 issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

The worms created these electronic components because of their ability to detoxify their body tissue. When worms ingest the metals, proteins in their body shuttle these "toxins" to tissues called chloragogen cells that are similar to a liver in mammals. In the case of?cadmium, a molecule called?metallothionein attaches to it to take it away.?Through several chemical steps the worm separates the metals from the organic molecules they are attached to and stores them in tiny cavities its body, but not forever: eventually whatever toxic metals the worm eats are excreted.?

Squirmy semiconductor factories
In the experiment the scientists spiked soil with cadmium chloride and sodium tellurite (sodium, telluride and oxygen). The ability of worms to process cadmium is well known, but it wasn't clear what they would do with the tellurium in the sodium tellurite.

The worms ended up making tiny particles of cadmium telluride, a crystalline compound that is also a semiconductor. Those tiny particles ? called quantum dots ? were then taken out of the worms' tissue. The dots themselves are only nanometers across. [Twisted Physics: 7 Mind-Bending Findings]

In biological imaging, quantum dots are used in place of dyes because they can be "tuned" to glow at specific wavelengths. Cadmium telluride dots, for example, glow green when hit with blue light. The researchers tested the dots on animal cells and found they worked as well as the ones created in laboratories.

The success doesn't mean that thousands of worms are to be sacrificed for dot-making, said co-author Mark Green, a reader in nanotechnology at King's College.

"The interesting bit is that semiconductor quantum dots, which emit light, were made in a living animal," he told Livescience via email. "The aim of the work wasn?t to come up with a new synthetic process of making dots that are better than bench-synthesized materials, it was just to see if we could do solid-state chemistry in a living animal ? and it appears we can!"

A dotty idea
Green said the idea occurred to him several years back when he was an Oxford University post-doctoral researcher. He heard a lecturer note that animals use certain proteins to get rid of toxic metals such as cadmium. Green realized he was doing something similar to make cadmium telluride quantum dots in the lab, sans worms.

He wondered if some extra chemical might spur worms to make their own cadmium telluride quantum dots.

"The big problem," he said, "was that I didn't know enough biology, and I could see immediately that trying to get the dots out of an animal would be a problem."

So Green shelved the idea for a few years, until he met Stephen St?rzenbaum, the lead author of the paper. St?rzenbaum told Green that he knew exactly where cadmium given to worms went: to the detoxifying chloragogen cells. Since the cadmium ? and thus the nanoscale dots ? would end up there, it would be relatively easy to get them out of the worm.

So they tried it. It worked.

"We were very surprised, didn't really expect it to work that easily," Green said.

The quantum dots Green and his team made aren't quite the quality of the lab-bench versions. That may change, though. "We'd like to think we can play around with some of the chemistry and make them better," Green said.

Pinterest Sued by Former Business Partner of Early Investor - Liz ...

Pinterest has arrived at that special milestone for any successful start-up: The day you get sued by someone who says the whole thing was his idea.

pinterest_scalesTheodore F. Schroeder of Ocean City, N.J., filed a lawsuit yesterday in New York district court, alleging misappropriation, unjust enrichment and breach of fiduciary duty against Pinterest and its early investor Brian Cohen.

?The lawsuit against Pinterest is baseless and we will fight it aggressively,? a spokesman for Pinterest said today.

Update: Schroeder?s attorney,?Richard Scheff of Montgomery McCracken, emailed the following comment:??The bottom line is that it?s illegal to steal an idea for your own benefit without regard to the originator of that idea. Here, Mr. Cohen?joined an existing enterprise in which Mr Schroeder had a majority interest, and then took without permission or right Mr. Schroeder?s ideas, concepts, web application and technology.?

Cohen did not reply to a request for comment.

Schroeder?s complaint says that he and Cohen worked together in 2007 and 2008 on a start-up venture that was an antecedent to Pinterest. According to Schroeder, the ideas he built for that project ? called Rendezvoo, and later, Skoopwire ? were incorporated into Pinterest, which Cohen provided early funding for in 2009.

Rendezvoo was a ?a Web site where people meet to share opinions, views, items and tastes on a variety of subjects ? product, services, events, politics, economics ? nearly anything of human interest? with about 5,000 users. It included two ?lynchpin? concepts that later found their way into Pinterest: ?Boards? for posting content and so-called ?infinite scrolling,? where users don?t have to load another page to view more content.

Plus, Schroeder said, Rendezvoo had a ?pink and purple color scheme to attract female users,? and Pinterest is now well-known for its appeal to women.

Schroeder and Cohen, who is a public relations entrepreneur and chairman of the New York Angels investing group, had worked together on Rendezvoo as well as a later pivot called Skoopwire, which was a free press-release service for new products. Cohen, who served as chairman and CEO, apparently pushed the team away from its more Pinterest-like ideas for Rendezvous, and then later he and Schroeder had a falling out over equity and roles.

The lawsuit accuses Cohen of striking a ?Faustian deal? with the founders of Pinterest. ?In 2009, a year after Cohen had caused a deadlock ? Cohen had given Plaintiff?s ideas and applications to young entrepreneurs.?

One particularly oddball aspect of the case is that, outside of the lawsuit, I wasn?t able to find much of any information about Schroeder. He is apparently a Columbia Law School graduate and Internet entrepreneur who has virtually no online presence ? unless perhaps he is the Ted Schroeder of Ocean City, N.J. who owns a gluten-free taco shop.

Update: According to Scheff, Schroeder is not the taco shop owner; he is a young practicing lawyer and ?self-taught computer genius??working in the Philadelphia region at a company that he does not want to disclose.

Here?s the full lawsuit:

Man pushed to death in front of NYC subway

Detectives in New York are searching for a female suspect who fled a subway station after a man was fatally pushed in front of a train on an elevated platform in Queens, N.Y.

At 8:04 p.m. on Thursday an unnamed man was standing on the northbound platform at 40th Street and Queens Blvd., waiting for the 7 train. Witnesses told police that a woman was walking back and forth on the platform and talking to herself before she took a seat on a wooden bench on the platform.

As the 7 train approached the station, witnesses said the woman rose from the bench and pushed the man onto the tracks, who was standing with his back to her.

Witnesses told police that the victim did not notice the woman behind him. He was struck by the first of the 11-car train, with his body pinned under the front of the second car as the train came to a stop, according to a statement from Deputy Commissioner Paul Brown.

After pushing the man onto the platform the woman then fled down the stairs to Queens Blvd. She was described as wearing a blue, white and grey ski jacket, and grey and red Nike sneakers.

It is unclear if the two knew each other, or whether anyone attempted to help the man to the platform before he was struck by the train.

Overnight the NYPD released surveillance video of the woman believed to be the suspect, Detectives were also canvassing locations along Queens Blvd for other witnesses and surveillance video.

Thursday's incident marks the second straphanger death this month--a man was killed in midtown after being pushed onto the subway tracks under an oncoming train.

On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was tossed onto the subway track at 49th Street and Seventh Avenue around 12:30 p.m. after an altercation with a man who was later identified as 30-year-old Naeem Davis. Davis has been charged with murder in Han's death and was ordered held without bail.

Increased Home Building Hints at Recovery in Macomb Township ...

Michigan?s residential building is nowhere near where it was at its 2004 peak, but in Macomb Township and across the state, the signs of recovery are unmistakable.

Home building is picking up in Michigan, with nearly 7,800 permits issued as of September 2012 ? a 32 percent increase over last year, according to the Home Builders Association of Michigan.

In Macomb Township, the number of residential building permits issued increased from six in January to 25 just one month later, in February 2012. This number peaked in March with 48 residential building permits approved for single-family homes and 16 condominium permits.?

?The market was definitely on the up-swing in Macomb Township this year. I believe the increase in home building is a sign of consumer confidence and an attraction to Macomb Township for people to want to live,? said Daniel Fairless, Macomb Township building official.?

The Home Builders Association of Michigan projects that across the state this year, approximately 10,400 new homes will be completed. While this number is up from the 8,001 recorded in 2011, it is only a fraction of the 44,782 homes built in 2004.

This optimism on the part of builders appears to extend across the state, according to a recent statewide survey of homebuilders and remodelers conducted by the HBAM.

Covering the time period of July through September 2012 ? the third quarter ? the survey showed the Michigan Housing Index at its highest level in two-and-a-half years, according to a press release from HBAM.

?The trend lines have been positive, so it is encouraging to see that the outlook for building continues to improve,? said Robert Filka, HBAM CEO, in a press release. ?We?ve got a long way to go before we see anything near normal historical production, but things are definitely headed in the right direction.?

The summer months were also fruitful for Macomb Township, with a total of 49 residential building permits issued in June, 54 in July and in 53 in August.?

Trustee and longtime resident Roger Krzeminski believes Macomb Township?s high numbers are due to many factors, including the township?s five school districts, the many newer commercial developments, and the selection of available homes in varying price ranges, he said.?

?The developments in the various parts of the township and school districts in those areas is what makes this township great,? he said.?

Mars Rover Curiosity Spends Holidays at 'Grandma's House'

NASA's Curiosity rover worked through the holiday season on Mars by taking a close look at an intriguing bit of Martian terrain, a region scientists have lovingly nicknamed "Grandma's House."

The Curiosity rover is currently parked inside Yellowknife Bay, a shallow depression of odd terrain nestled inside the rover's vast Gale crater landing site. "Grandma's House" is an informal name for Curiosity's holiday spot inside the bay, rover team member Colette Lohr said in a NASA video.

"This is a really exciting time for the team because we've started to do what we call discovery-driven planning," said Lohr, Curiosity tactical uplink lead at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "And this is, in a sense, when we hand the rover keys to the science team."

Curiosity's handlers spent two days preloading the rover with instructions for science observations over 11 Martian days (or sols), which allowed rover team members to spend the year-end holidays with their families and friends.

The rover didn't get much of a vacation. It spent Christmas and Christmas Eve recording a 360-degree panoramic view of Yellowknife Bay that should give researchers an even clearer view of the area, Lohr said.

Yellowknife Bay, a 2-foot-deep (half-meter) basin, is an interesting spot for Mars scientists because the area contains terrain unlike any yet seen by the Curiosity rover. Mission scientists are studying rock targets in the region in order to pick one for Curiosity to drill inside.

Curiosity has been studying the region using its mast-mounted cameras and laser, but the ultimate goal is the first trial of the rover's percussive drill. The instrument is designed to drill inside a rock and collect the powdery rock sample from the interior so it can be analyzed by other onboard tools ? something never-before attempted on Mars, NASA officials said. The drilling test is set for early in 2013.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity landed on Mars on Aug. 5 to begin exploring the Red Planet. The $2.5 billion rover's primary mission is to determine if its Gale crater landing site could have ever supported primitive microbial life.

Curiosity is currently driving toward a spot called Glenelg near the base of Mount Sharp, a 3-mile (5 kilometers) mountain that rises up from the center of its Gale crater landing site.
