Where will you be sailing?
We?ll sail onboard the research vessel Atlantis to the Mid-Cayman Spreading Center, which harbors the world?s deepest chain of volcanoes. It?s south of the Cay?man Islands and west of Jamaica and Cuba. We first visited the site two years ago with a submarine called Nereus, and we found evidence of three new hydro?thermal vents. On this cruise, we want to send our remotely operated underwater vehicle [ROV] Jason down to do a sam??p?ling mission at one of those vents and at another one discovered in 2010 by a team led by the U.K.?s National Oceanography Center, Southampton.

Tell me more about the area you?ll be exploring.
The Mid-Cayman Spreading Center is a really exciting place to work, partly because of the diversity of the environ?ment there. It?s an ultraslow-spreading ridge, which means it has a low level of volcanic activity and a lot of tectonic activity. There are many different types of rocks, from volcanic basalt to peri?do?tite, a rock that?s more like the mantle and gets pulled up from deeper within the earth. The rock composition around a vent is a big driver of that vent?s chem?istry, and what I hope to understand is the chemistry of these two systems and how the pressure and rocks can cause the chemistry to change.

How do you find a hydrothermal vent?
We use a sensor that looks for the reducing potential of the water?how much oxygen is present. A deep-sea hydrothermal vent emits water that contains very low levels of oxygen. That low-oxygen water comes up from the vent, and as it drifts along we can detect the plume.

Once you find a vent, what do you need to do to sample it?
We?re sending Jason on the sampling mission with four titanium bottles that will hold water samples; other people are sending bioboxes and things to put sulfide structures in. Jason is a workhorse. It?s a really powerful sub?marine. It can stay down for more than 24 hours and has strong manip?ulator arms.

What else are you hoping to find?
Our studies seek to extend the known limits of life on earth. One of our goals is to understand whether or not organic molecules can be synthesized abiotically [without living organisms] in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, which carries im?plications for the origin and suste?nance of life on the early earth and will inform future missions searching for life on other planetary bodies.

Gingrich: Washington state allowing same-sex unions 'the right way'

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Friday that states that pass same-sex marriage legislation are handling the issue "the right way," because the decision is not in the hands of judges.

The legislature in Washington state, where Gingrich is campaigning, last week passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage that will go into effect in June, unless opponents can gather 120,000 signatures to force a referendum. The former House speaker was asked for his opinion on states passing such legislation after meeting with members of the Washington state Republican caucus at the Capitol.

"I think at least they're doing it the right way, which is going through voters, giving them a chance to vote and not having a handful of judges arbitrarily impose their will," Gingrich told reporters. He made a point of saying Friday that he doesn't agree with the legislation and that he would vote "no" if it were on a referendum.

Maryland also recently voted to allow same-sex marriage, joining six states and the District of Columbia with similar laws on the books -- Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. The New Jersey legislature approved same-sex marriage this month, but Republican Gov. Chris Christie vetoed the legislation and the issue may go to a referendum.

But in some states, the courts have been much more involved in the issue. In 2009, Iowa's Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling overturning a gay marriage ban as unconstitutional. Three of the judges who ruled in that case were voted out of office in the 2010 midterm elections, an effort that Gingrich supported and helped finance through one of his nonprofit organizations.

Speaking later to a capacity crowd of 450 at a Best Western, Gingrich continued his recent attacks on President Obama's energy policy and again promised that he would bring gas prices down to between $2-$2.50 a gallon if he is elected. "The president would like to force all of us into small vehicles," Gingrich told the crowd. "The president would like to force all of us into what he thinks we should have. That's not freedom. The fact is, we all need to say to Barack Obama, you know, he's president of the wrong country."

TAYLOR ? One way to think spring is when runners mark their calendars for the April 21 Downriver Dash 5K/Walk. Applications are now being accepted for the event, hosted by the Guidance Center to promote physical activity and wellness.

The second annual run begins and ends at Wayne County Community College?s Downriver campus, 21000 North Line Road, and the trail winds through Taylor?s Heritage Park. Along with the 5K course open to runners and walkers, a Tot Trot for children 10 and under will cover a half mile, with face painting, popcorn and medals for participants.

Registrations are now being accepted online at www.guidance-center.org. Entry fees are $20 for individuals who register before April 8, $25 for late entries. Family and group packages are available at $15 per person; there is no fee to enter the Tot Trot.

For information regarding registration or sponsorships, call the Center at 734-785-7705. The Guidance Center has served Downriver families for 53 years with an emphasis on supporting adults and children with mental health difficulties.

In partnership with educators and residents, the Center?s outreach programs include early childhood education, free pre-school for low-income families, workforce development, Kids-TALK and community gardens. The Center assists more than 26,000 community members annually.

STEVENS POINT, WI - For the third time in three years, Stevens Point Brewery is expanding its production capacity to keep up with demand.

The latest expansion ? a $1.1 million project includes nine new fermentation tanks, two new bright beer tanks, a new 7,000-gallon hot water tank and a centrifuge for filtering finished beer. When all of the new equipment is up and running this spring, the brewery will be able to brew 120,000 barrels of beer annually, a 20% increase.

Since 2009 the Stevens Point Brewery has invested approximately $1.5 million in new equipment and additional storage space to increase capacity and improve efficiency, according to Joe Martino, Stevens Point Brewery Operating Partner.

?Last year we added 6,600 square feet of warehouse space, five aging tanks and three fermentation tanks to bring our brewing capacity up to 100,000 barrels per year,? Martino said. ?In 2010, we built a 2,700-square-foot addition to expand our keg cooler room and add four aging tanks.

?We have our loyal customers to thank for our continued success, and as our sales continue to grow, we?ll continue to expand our capacity to keep up with the demand,? Martino added. ?We?ve still got plenty of room to grow and we fully intend to do so.?

The two new bright beer tanks for package release beer will allow Point Brewmasters Gabe Hopkins and John Zappa and their team of Brewing Operators to brew six days per week instead of five. The 120-barrel tanks, which hold finished beer ready for the bottle and can lines, will be installed by the end of February.

The nine new fermentation tanks scheduled to be installed in late March are vertical fermentation ?unitanks? and represent a first for the Stevens Point Brewery, according to Hopkins. ?Our new vertical tanks are twice as tall as they are wide, and they?re called unitanks because they allow us to ferment and age beer all in one vessel,? he explained. ?Vertical tanks also enable improved dry hopping of our beer. Traditional fermenters are horizontal and can be used for either fermenting or aging, but not both in the same tank.?

The centrifuge, which will arrive in April, will help improve beer quality and production efficiencies. ?We will be able to filter beer faster and improve the quality of our product in the package,? Hopkins said.

The new hot water tank will be used to heat water at the beginning of the brewing process and will be the first piece of new equipment to be installed, in mid-February.

But GJ 1214b, which is located 40 light-years from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer), is something new altogether, researchers said.

It orbits a red-dwarf star at a distance of 1.2 million miles (2 million kilometres), giving it an estimated surface temperature of 446 degrees Fahrenheit (230 degrees Celsius) ? too hot to host life as we know it.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum is attacking Mitt Romney's leadership at the Salt Lake City Olympics.

Romney regularly promotes his role in the 2002 Winter Games and cites it during his White House bid.

But Santorum tells a tea party rally in Columbus, Ohio, that Romney's rescue was made possible only because Romney "heroically" went to Congress and asked for tens of millions of dollars for the Olympics.

The Romney campaign doesn't dispute that congressional earmarks helped save the games. But his campaign notes that Santorum voted for the money when he was in the Senate ? and backed other pet projects.

Romney plans to attend a 10th anniversary celebration in Salt Lake City on Saturday night.

Romney struggling to attract white working class

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney is faltering with white working-class voters crucial to his party's drive to capture the White House, even as he tries to fend off a rising GOP challenger, Rick Santorum, who wields strong blue-collar appeal.

The wealthy former Bain Capital chief has led his rivals by comfortable margins among white college graduates, according to combined polls of voters in the first five states that held presidential nominating contests. But the exit and entry surveys showed only a modest Romney advantage among whites who lack college degrees, the yardstick analysts typically use to define the working class.

The imbalance was most pronounced among less-educated white men, with whom his lead disappeared.

More recent polling bears out the same problem for Romney. According to a national poll of Republicans released this week by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, the former Massachusetts governor has a slender lead over Santorum among whites with degrees but trails him among working-class whites, 36 percent to 23 percent.

Romney's lukewarm performance with less-educated whites could haunt him in the Feb. 28 Michigan primary. Though it's Romney's native state, Santorum is using his upbringing in the western Pennsylvania manufacturing town of Butler, his rougher-edged style and his "Made in America" proposals for boosting U.S. manufacturing to woo Michigan's many blue-collar voters.

Romney's weakness with working-class whites is a liability he would also have to address as the nominee. GOP presidential candidates often need big margins from this group to offset weaker support from others.

"It has to be a concern," said GOP pollster John McLaughlin, who is not working for a presidential candidate. "What these voters are looking for is, 'Tell me how you're going to help my life.' If we can't articulate that, then we're going to lose."

Some voters view Romney as "an ultra-wealthy individual," said David Hill, another GOP pollster who is not working in the presidential race. "They have a sense he cannot identify with ordinary Americans. He'll have ample time over the course of campaigning in the general election to rectify that."

The sometimes-staid Romney is already trying to do just that.

He recently described his father as a carpenter who could spit nails out of his mouth "pointy end forward," without mentioning that George Romney became CEO of the American Motors Corp. and governor of Michigan. He also described how rising fuel and food prices have been "tough for middle-income families in America," and said the country needs a president with "experience in a factory or experience in a workplace" who can understand how to create jobs.

Santorum, son and grandson of Italian immigrants, has a more personal connection to working-class voters that he's always ready to discuss. He cites his childhood living in apartments provided by the Veterans Administration, where his father worked as a psychologist, and never misses an opportunity to discuss his grandfather.

"My grandfather was a coal miner. I grew up in a steel town, with blue-collar roots," the now well-off former Pennsylvania senator said Tuesday in Boise, Idaho.

Strategists and political scientists attribute Romney's problem partly to his personal wealth and financier background and a string of statements his opponents have used to characterize him as an out-of-touch patrician. He has jokingly called himself unemployed, said he knows what it is like to fear a pink slip and characterized his $373,000 earnings from paid speeches as "not very much" money.

Romney has also been hurt by his tax returns. They show he pays around 15 percent of his income in taxes ? less than many middle-income families ? and has placed some assets in Swiss bank accounts and other exotic locations like the Cayman Islands.

"There's no identification, no connection that he makes with some of these voters," said Terry Madonna, a political scientist and pollster at Franklin & Marshall College.

Romney pollster Neil Newhouse says his candidate's early showing with the working class has been "a soft spot" because Santorum and Gingrich have targeted those same voters. That won't translate to Election Day, Newhouse said.

"The general election will be about President Obama and his accomplishments and lack thereof," Newhouse said.

Combined figures for the first five states to vote ? Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and Nevada ? show ideology was also a factor. Just 22 percent of Romney's votes came from working-class whites who consider themselves very conservative. Santorum got 52 percent of his votes from that group and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Romney's biggest rival at the time, got 45 percent.

In those early contests, Romney led Gingrich by 43 percent to 28 percent among whites who completed college, the polls show.

That gap shrank to a 39 percent-to-33 percent Romney advantage among whites without college degrees. White men who haven't graduated college tilted 37 percent to 33 percent toward Gingrich.

Romney's 20-percentage-point advantage over Gingrich among white female college graduates in those states falls slightly, to 15 points, among less educated white women.

Santorum swept GOP presidential contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri last week. There were no exit polls in those races, but the combined surveys for the first five states show Santorum, who had not yet built momentum as a candidate, trailing both Romney and Gingrich badly among white working-class voters.

Ironically, Romney's problem echoes an even more serious weakness that candidate Barack Obama showed in 2008 when trying to reach those same working-class white voters.

Obama lost them badly in the Democratic primaries to rival Hillary Rodham Clinton before losing them by 18 percentage points to GOP candidate Sen. John McCain that November. Obama remedied that by coming close among white college graduates and prevailing overwhelmingly among minorities.

Republicans want to drive their margin among working-class whites as high as possible this year to offset Obama's advantage with minorities. Working-class whites comprise around 4 in 10 voters in recent general elections.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LeBolt says Romney will be hurt among these voters by his background at Bain, the private equity firm, whose corporate buyouts sometimes eliminated jobs.

"The essential question of the election is, 'Who's going to restore economic security for the middle class?'" LeBolt said.

The data is based on surveys conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research as voters arrived at or left randomly selected sites in this year's GOP caucuses and primaries in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and Nevada. The results of the five surveys were combined and each was weighted to reflect its share of the votes cast.

The combined survey involved interviews with 11,376 voters and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.

GOP pushes back against any further cuts in nukes (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congressional Republicans on Wednesday vowed to block the Obama administration from sharply cutting the U.S. nuclear force, calling potential reductions of as much as 80 percent in the number of deployed weapons "reckless lunacy."

Pointing to the growing number of trouble spots, from Iran to Syria to Egypt, members of the House Armed Services Committee said any significant cuts would undermine the U.S. ability to deter aggression. The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that the administration is weighing several options for new reductions from the current treaty limit of 1,550 deployed strategic warheads.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the committee that no decision has been made and maintaining the current level is one of the options. But that did little to assuage GOP lawmakers.

"I just want to go on record as saying that there are many of us that are going to do everything we possibly can to make sure that this preposterous notion does not gain any real traction," said Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz.

The most modest option under discussion would return the United States to a level not seen in more than half a century, when the Soviet Union and the U.S. pushed ahead in a Cold War nuclear arms race. The administration is weighing at least three options for lower total numbers, cutting to around 1,000 to 1,100, 700 to 800, or 300 to 400.

Although Dempsey said maintaining the status quo is one option, further cuts are consistent with President Barack Obama's 2009 promise to pursue the elimination of nuclear weapons and the 2010 Nuclear Posture Review, which called for an "implementation study" by the Defense Department to review the nation's nuclear deterrence requirements with an eye toward further reductions in the size of the arsenal.

Last March, National Security Adviser Tom Donilon said the administration was making preparations for the next round of nuclear reductions.

Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, complained that such a step would encourage other nations to advance their nuclear programs. Fearing Iran's nuclear ambitions, the United States and the international community have imposed tough sanctions on Tehran.

"If they see that we are going to come down from 1,500 to some number in the low to middle hundreds, it does nothing but encourage our enemies and discourage our friends," Thornberry said. "And the result of that is more nuclear weapons programs all across the world, which would seem to me to be something that we would not want to have happen."

Panetta said a number of options are being discussed but provided no specifics. He insisted any decision would be part of a treaty that would have to be ratified by the Senate.

"As you know, reductions that have been made, at least in this administration, have only been made as part of the START process and not outside of that process. And I would expect that that would be the same in the future," Panetta said.

Rep. Michael Turner, R-Ohio, raised serious concerns about cuts of 80 percent. Franks called that "reckless lunacy." In a statement, Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., accused Obama of "catering to his liberal base that believes that if we unilaterally disarm, the rest of the world will follow suit and threats to our national security will just go away."

Rose Gottemoeller, the State Department's top arms control official, told reporters Wednesday that although the administration is not yet ready to begin a new round of nuclear arms reduction negotiations with Russia, officials on both sides already are holding "serious discussions" on issues that should be settled before negotiations begin.

She said such discussions have begun, for example, on reaching a common understanding of which sets of U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons should be included in the "strategic" category and which are "non-strategic." The difference is important because until now, U.S.-Russian nuclear arms negotiations have dealt only with strategic weapons, which traditionally are defined as those capable of reaching either the U.S. or Russian homeland. The Russians argue that U.S. nuclear weapons based in Europe should be included in the "strategic" category; the U.S. disagrees.

Panetta and Dempsey were pressed on the issue during their second day of congressional testimony on Obama's defense budget for 2013. Democrats and Republicans are resisting proposed cuts in the size of the Army and Marine Corps, cutbacks on shipbuilding, delays in the purchase of some fighter jets and weapons systems and another round of domestic base closings.

Overall, the budget for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1 would provide $525.4 billion in base spending and another $88.5 billion for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The total is nearly $32 billion less than this year's budget.

Panetta repeatedly reminded lawmakers that the cuts were dictated by the budget agreement reached by Obama and Congress last summer, a pact supported by the panel's chairman, Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., and many other members of the committee.

"The bottom line here is we were handed a number for defense reductions. We stepped up to the plate, we met our obligations to try to do this in a way that would still preserve for us an effective force to deal with the threats," Panetta said.

Committee Republicans argued that Obama had called for $400 billion in reductions over 10 years last April, months before the deficit-cutting plan.

Looking at future budgets, Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, the panel's top Democrat, said that in reality the cuts are a reduction in projected spending.

"It's a decrease in the increase," Smith said.
