Today's photo: Hurricane Ridge's snow-capped vista

Pat Abbott / UGC

Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park, Wash.

Pat Abbott happened upon this stunning scene on Hurricane Ridge in Washington state's Olympic National Park.

Abbott made the trip to Hurricane Ridge in June 2010. Driving up the road to the vista, Abbott could see only fog.

"We thought, 'This is going to be a wasted trip," he told TODAY.com. "But then we make a turn around the mountains and it opens up, all of a sudden ... there's a vast expanse of snow-covered mountains."

Abbot noticed the deer nearby and positioned himself quietly on the ground while taking photos. The deer came as close as six to eight feet, Abbott said. "It was a surreal moment."
